Hi all,

With a large variety of tools aboard I found a few beginning to rust and wondered what type of preventative measures I could take to stay ahead of this. I’ve been using PB blaster, but it doesn’t hold up well and the odor is in the boat for days. What have you all been using?

I put a piece of Corrosion Inhibiting paper in the tool box.

Look for “Zerust” on Amazon or equivalent.
the box has to be relatively tight, but I have been using the vapor capsules for years and they work.

Buy Stainless or Titanium Tools.
or
one that offers free exchanges, if rusting, like Kobalt and Craftsman brands.

I use WD-40. It is not great but better than nothing. And it smells less offensive than PB. Also the WD stands for "water displacement" so I want to believe it works. (Just don't look at the evidence and you can stay happy longer)

I have had success using Corrosion Block

Manufactured by Lear Chemical Research Company. https://www.learchem.com/products/corrosion-block.html

I became sold on the product since I tried to clean up a cheap Masters lock that was at the point of failure after 3 months exposed on the lazerett hasp. Sprayed it into the lock and wiped the lock down with the rag catching the drips. Put the key in the lock and worked the tumblers to spread the material. Lock was attached and left in the open for 18 months. Insert the key and turn the lock it opens like new. Lock has now been in service for 4 years. I repeat the service about once a year now.

Hahahahaha... Okay, I'm sure it works fine and is worth trying out but I can't help but cringe at the marketing for this stuff

First! We have the eerily purple liquid inside an erlenmeyer flask (CLASSIC SCI-FI CHEMISTRY) with the hint of spooky molecules in the background.

Then there are these odd wordings

KILLS CORROSION.... lol

Corrosion Block is a clean fluid... using advanced polar bonding chemistry.

I have no idea what "clean" means in this context... same with "fluid"...air is a fluid and so is glass. Why not say liquid? There is so much that is wrong with "advanced polar bonding chemistry" ... I could write an entire 50 minute lecture starting with that as the prompt. Since later they imply it sequesters water I assume they mean hydrogen bonding and there is nothing novel, new or advanced about hydrogen bonding.

... and more odd wordings such as...

Synthetic additives in Corrosion Block completely penetrate corrosion cells:facepalm::laugh:
(I'm not even going to comment)
...replacing the salt water which is then allowed to evaporate.

Dangling modifiers not withstanding, is it the salt, the water or the corrosion block that is evaporating?

Then it ends with...

Corrosion Block’s hydrophobic film remains to further protect the metal

There is no chemically compatible way something can have "advanced polar chemistry" and be "hydrophobic" but I have to give credit to the creative writers in the marketing department.

I understand your critique. I came by the product when working with my rigger who was servicing a Boeing engineer’s boat. The AreoSpace engineer took the product to work and had it evaluated for use on metal. Came back to my rigger and gave it a big thumbs up for use on the metal of his boat.

Wait a minute
Advanced Polar Bonding is 2 or more Polar Bears Mating?

Hydrophobic = is the Mad Dog Disease.

Evaporating Salt Water leaves behind a white crust that looks like a corrosion product.

Even @All U Get laughed at
Titanium Tools
He needs to check out WestMarine's assortment of them.

Remember Corrosion is just the metal protecting itself.

My Dad told me...
Clean that Shovel and coat it with "3 in 1" oil after use so it lasts you a long time.

I asked why do that. Watch this...
Went to the Garden, Stuck the shovel in the Ground , then pulled it out...

Look Dad, not more corrosion on the Shovel.:ass:

Jim...

PS: In my lifetime I have only lost a wire crimper/cutter to corrosion. $15 replacement and it was an improved design.:pimp:
PSS: I still have that 40 year old shovel, the Handle cracked but the blade is still fine.

I put a piece of Corrosion Inhibiting paper in the tool box.

This paper is good stuff - can be used in lots of places.

I also will use Boeshield T-9.
