The post about shroud tensioning got me thinking about rarely used tools and wondered if anyone knew of a source for renting such things as a shroud tensioner or a cutlass bearing removal tool. Tensioners cost about $100 and would be used once in 5 years by any given sailor?

Tension gauges and bearing pullers are fairly common among those of us who do our own maintenance. A variety of common tools can be used as tension pullers too so I doubt there is any market for rental.
I can't imagine a marina with a service dept which doesn't have these things you could use or rent but I may be wrong as I never tried.

I suspect if the boat were hauled out at a boat yard they might let you rent or use their tools, which would be the case for the cutlass bearing. Doubt they would let anyone walk off with a tensioner even if you were willing to leave a deposit. Are you thinking that any tensioner that could measure up to 1000 lbs or so would work?

The thing with a tension gauge is you need to know where to stop pulling, and a Loos gauge does that. It wouldn't take nearly a thousand pounds though, a twenty pound fish scale may work. But again, you need to know exactly how FAR to go with the gauge. And I wish I were closer, you could use mine, I certainly don't put my hands on it often..

You're right Chris. I was looking at breaking point. The tension is probably around 3-700 lbs. Hunter actually provides the tension figures for the H31 using Loos gauge at http://www.marlow-hunter.com/export...r RF Mast Riggig 2010 Info guide US Spars.pdf.

The Loos PT-1 is for cable up to 5/32 and the PT-2 3/16-1/4. I think the H-31 requires the PT-2. The manual has the wire specs on the forestay, backsay and shrouds.

Maybe someone local will check in and I can rent from them.

another nice thing about the loo's gauge is that you can get a balanced cable tension on all your upper and lower side stays ...even if it is off a few lbs will not matter because they will all be the same ...best tool in the bag for the money ....you may pic one up on e bay for about 50 bucks if you watch for it
