I have the opportunity to purchase a 1992 Tahotsu 15hp electric start long shaft for my H22. Is this too much motor for this boat? I usually sail in the Gulf along the Florida panhandle. I have reinforced the motor bracket with wood on the inside of the transom. Also, does anyone know what the motor weight is rated for on a H22?? Thanks in advance, Mark

Yep, Way Too Much

In fact about twice maybe three times what you need. Look at this other thread for some good info.

safety factor

May be too much on the transom or outboard motor bracket. I have seen the results of damage to both with a 15 at full power. Suggest no more than an 8 hp for that boat.

Too heavy

Mark; I had a 7HP on my 22 and found it too heavy. I downgraded to a Merc 5HP and it works very well. Admit I am a fare-weather sailor; I have been in high winds and tide where I wish I had more power, but that has been rare..Seth

Don't do it

I live in Portland, Me where the tides are strong and use a 23 year old 7.5 two cycle. The thing works great even against the tide. Todays motors are generally 4 stroke which means more weight on top of a motor thats twice as large as you need.
