Okay Sea Dogs,I am thinking pot here, do I go with a toilet that exits the waste out the bottom of the boat? Or do I glass in the hull threw and go to a chemical toilet? How do you empty the chemical toilet…or do you? I am thinking the less holes in the bottom of the boat the better. One hole is to many in my mind…lol. Man looses his sail boat due to holes in the bottom of the boat. Great… that will be on channel 6 News…So any ideaers?LarrySent from Windows Mail

I sail with 3 females who refuse to use the porta potti, and "hold" it till we get into port (I do not make long cruises unless I am alone), of course the buckets gets poured over the side and rinsed, but I never take a "dump" into it, only take a leak ! , otherwise I hold it ! I glassed in ALL of my thru-hulls except for the raw water intake for
the engine, and the sink exhaust.  I have gone with a porta-potti., if the
truth be known, I really use a bucket , and save
the hassle of emptying and cleaning the porta-potty.

Okay Sea Dogs,


I am thinking pot here, do I go with a toilet that exits the waste out the
bottom of the boat? Or do I glass in the hull threw and go to a chemical toilet?
How do you empty the chemical toilet…or do you? I am thinking the less holes in
the bottom of the boat the better. One hole is to many in my mind…lol. Man
looses his sail boat due to holes in the bottom of the boat. Great… that will be
on channel 6 News…So any ideaers?

behind a curtain or with my eyes looking somewhere else! Sea water cleans the
bucket!

A search on "sailboat composting toilet" or even "albin vega composting toilet" gets lots of hits. IIRC there has been some concern on Vegas over (no pun intended) headroom because at least one composting toilet is taller then standard plumbing.Alan

I had seriously considered going with a chemical toilet. It would have been much easier. However, many marinas are becoming "green" and part of the requirement is to forbid dumping chemical toilet tanks in the marina facility restroom toilets. Pump out stations also don't work. It was easier in the long run for me to go the holding tank route. There are pump out adaptors for some chemical toilets so that you can set up a deck access pump out, but I don't know if the adaptor would remove the capability of removing the tank to manually dump. I have an airhead in my Vega, well just sitting there as I have never installed it (too many other projects). It is 19 inches high and will fit, but it is tall. I am 6'1 and when I put it on the platform in the Vega I have to bend my head down and my feet don't reach the floor. There is just enough room widthwise -- but barely. I am probably not going to install it and will sell it on some listing board. But then, I am probably going to sell Flyaway in the next several months (it will be a really good buy for someone as it has a Beta, new mast and rigging (2005), two head sails and a roller furling jib). I had the hull professionally painted (but not the deck).I am trying to install a new fuel tank now and there are some other projects than need finishing -- it isn't a project boat, but a work in progress. Why am I selling. Well after a couple surgeries and breaking my foot, a small sailboat is not all that great a place to hang-out.My biggest problem is what to charge for it with the $25K I put into the engine, rig, and sails (I always have my sails built by Port Townsend sails and I was readying the boat for offshore, so I didn't spare any expense on critical areas). My daughter says I should part it out as I'd get more money and she is probably right, but it is too nice a boat to do that to.Chris BrownThe Truth will set you free. I have an airhead. Not on a Vega but I did have to make some changes to accomadate its footprint. This is my second airhead and I think it is great. My wife and I had a good opportunity to test it during the summer. All of August...mostly on the hook and no smell. Put it in my garden as compost when we returned. Not sure why all boats do not have them. I'll send pictures if you like.Sent from Simply

Hello Chris:Firstly I don't know what part of the world you live in. If it is somewhere that Eastern Canada is a sail-able destination. I would like to discuss your listing of Flyaway before you list it. For that matter if British Columbia is a reachable destination I still might be interested, (people move right?) British Canada is about 1.5 car hours away actually. The boat is in the Everett, WA marina and I live 15 minutes south. From the records I have seen, Flyaway was originally a Canadian boat, I believe she was moored just north of Vancouver at Sidney BC. The boat needs to be finished, for sure. But it is a great boat.( I am currently installing an electrical panel cabinet I built and trying to install a 13 gallon fuel tank.) And one of the cockpit locker lids is kind of shot so I am making one to do the job (if I were keeping her I'd build a craftsman teak hatch). What I'd really like to do is to sell the boat to someone who is as enthusiastic about her before I had my problems. And then work with that person for a couple weeks to get all the projects finished (a big part of that is deciding how to do what -- not the actually the skills on how to do that, but the where to take her. She is in a state now for someone to really make her a great boat without a huge amount of work or expense. If someone made a composting toilet that worked as well as the Airhead, but was about 6" lower, I'd buy it in a heartbeat. But a lot of boats just don't have the room between the hull and cabin top to accomodate the head with a 6' plus user sitting on top. Here in the Pacific Northwest and Southern British Columbia more marinas are providing free pumpout facilities which makes having a holding tank a workable solution.Peter
