I seem to remember reading somewhere that the single-ply stuff you can get at the grocery store was the same as the 'rapid-dissolving' stuff found in marine/RV stores, but a bit cheaper. Yves: I also remember that the same paper that is used for a SEPTIC TANK can be used in the holding tank. It disolves very rapidly. As I remember, you can do your own scientific test. Mix a piece of regulat TP in water and then use the SPETIC TANK stuff in some water. Just mix a couple of pieces in a bowl of water and see what happens. The one that disolves in water is the one to use. This was a test that Practical Sailor did a few years ago.

Use Pumpout?
We've been using the boat store paper all these years but I've wondered about the same thing. It would seem that if one uses the holding tank pumpout it wouldn't matter which paper is used, but then sometimes common sense reasoning can be flawed.

"Marine/RV toilet paper" is just...
cheap institutional grade toilet paper marked up to 3-4 times what you can buy it for at the supermarket. Don't use premium toilet papers--Charmin, White Cloud, Northern etc...they're full of extra fibers for added strength and creams for softness. If you have any doubt about whether a particular paper is suitable for use aboard, tear off a sheet and put it in a glass of water overnight. If it's still a whole sheet in the morning, don't use it...but if you stir the water and see "snow," it''s just fine for use in marine sanitation systems.
