I have a 1983 Hunter 34. toilet flushes okay, but dirty water flows back into bowl*while sailing. Isn';t there a check valve or something that is supposed to prevent this. What is solution?

Is it emptied regularly? If its just plain full its the first indicator to us that we are overdue at the pump out.

Joker valve. If it isn't closing completely it will come back into the bowl.

Make sure you are using enough rinse water to push everything out, and then in dry mode, be sure to pump a full 20 pumps. The be sure its locked when you're done.

We just replaced our Joker valve thinking it was the reason for some splash back as we dry pumped but it turns out that I think the pump needs to be lubed again. Until we can open it up to lube the inside, I put some vegetable oil in temporarily and it made a big difference in how smoothly the pumping out was. The joker valve we replace looked basically brand new after 2 years so it wasn't that. Maybe with a little bit sticky pump it was 'burping' which was causing a splash back... don't know for sure yet but will be pursuing it until its perfect again!

Joker valve. So named because the joke's on you. Some report they last for years, others say just a few months; I'm inclined to believe the latter. Just replaced one on a new head not six months old.
Lately I've been adding a teaspoon of vegetable oil once every several uses and the pump seems to work much more smoothly; I'm told it will prolong the life of the joker valve, but I can't vouch for that.

Make sure that the holding tank vent is clear .. Check your hose connections to be sure that the head discharge is going to the top fitting on the tank (and the pumpout on the bottom). Joker valve is a very likely culprit.. Hose from head to tank is short, so 5 pumps is generally enough to clear it.. since the head discharge goes to the tank top, "stuff" shouldn't get back to head bowl unless the line is not clear or the tank is very full.

Bman, attached is a copy of a write-up published by Practical Sailor a while back. Trust you'll find the info interesting. You are in MI so you need to winterize. I have had to change more joker valves for leaking reasons the last few years and the article made me realize that I am probably ruining them since winterizing with propylene glycol as opposed to the ethylene glycol we use to put in there before environmental concerns. This fall, I plan on removing it before winterizing. Easy job on my boat and the holding tank will have been emptied and flushed thoroughly in preparation for the winter.
