Does anyone know how to lock this OB in a straight position? It is on a Hunter 27, due to the fact that the inboard diesel is almost useless for backing out or docking. Thanks for any suggestions...John

There should be a tension nut just under outboard housing on the shaft. Can not remember which side on your model.
Okay I have to ask......
You have both an outboard and a inboard diesel ?? Why are you having trouble backing your hunter 27 with inboard diesel ?

I don't think there is a 'lock' as it were.. you can only adjust the turn friction. On some models, it's just a bolt on the side of the sleeve portion (behind the mounting clamps), and I've seen some that have a lever on front (between the mounting clamps) that you slide left or right to adjust. Check your manual (or find one online for your model).

As for reversing and docking.. I never had any problems with the inboard diesel in our H27, even though it was a bit underpowered (original 8HP yanmar). Maybe there is a problem you are overlooking..

Cheers,
Brad

If you anticipate that an outboard will help slow speed maneuverability you will be utterly disappointed. In order to gain steerage you must have water flowing past the rudder. An outboard is usually offset and does not direct water to the rudder. The h27 is notorious for excessive prop walk when backing up. Make sure the prop is not fouled with marine growth as that could be a source for your problem. Other than that learn how to use the prop walk and turning characteristics of the boat to your advantage. The use of spring lines to control prop walk is another method. Since wind and currents may be changing develop a couple of routines to handle different conditions. The boat cannot be steered like a power boat even with the addition of an outboard. I have always said that once someone masters dock maneuvers on an h27 that they can handle any other boat.
