Hi all,

I have a 2004, 2 stroke Tohatsu outboard I bought new. I just got a few replacement parts and a carb rebuild kit. I went looking for a maintenance manual on line to download and can NOT find one. I found batches of places to get the owners manual, but I still have that.

I would like to know the initial setup for the carb idle screw and any other info that might be needed on the carb rebuild.

Anybody out there have any info they could share with me???

Greg

I have not typically found service manuals available for free...

I have found there are manufacturer's service manuals, and 3rd party manuals such as Seloc. I bought a Suzuki manual for my old 2hp, and a Seloc for my Nissan.

Greg: Walt has a good suggestion. I have a new 4 stroke 3.5 Tohatsu . From my 2 stroke background I will provide what I can. When the float is put back in turn the carb over and set the tab so the float surface matches the gasket surface of the carb. Upside down and level. If it has a midrange needle and needs set: clip it in the middle for initial setting. If no needle it has fixed jetting for midrange. Run air screw all the way in until it just touches the bottom, back out 1.5 turns. If idle has to be reset just be sure it is turned well up. This should get you started. After warming up and choke off set the idle screw to RPM you want by ear. Next adjust the air screw until it purrs and is smooth as you go above idle. Restart numerous times adjust as needed. You probably won't have a misrange needle but if you do needle lower is leaner. If all is adjusted right it should run strong at top RPM. Hope this helps. Send msg if you need more help. Chief

THANKS for the replies so far.....

Walt,
I did a Youtube search, no joy there.

Brian S,
I found one for sale on Amazon, but over $30, and it covers many models. Just wanted info on primary set of needles and that's bit much for that.

Caguy,
I did find that, BUT, it's only the owners manual and has nothing about rebuilding any parts, and I still have the paper copy that I got with the OB.

I may be wrong but I believe Tohatsu is made by Nissan. Maybe do your web and youtube searches using Nissan instead of Tohatsu. You may have better luck.

Where are you guys? Chief
Back in Az. for the hurricane season. Guenevere is in Florida on the hard. We are planning on heading back in Oct for a bit of work (new engine mounts) and then south.

Take a look at our recap vid on Youtube for details. :D

You back in Ca.?? We may be doing a short trip to the SF Bay area in early Aug.???

Tohatsu builds the Nissan engins as well as the smaller Mercury engines too. If you can find any information to satisfy your needs on the Nissan or Mercury 3.5, they are identical.

an aside to Chief's post.. If the engine was running and no one has putzed with it much, count the turns as you GENTLY screw the jets in until they stop.. Record that number and which was where if more than one.. when ya go back with rebuild, put the screws in the same place to start and as Chief says, fine tune once ya get it going..

You got it close Kito! As Dave says: Tohatsu is the parent co. and Nissan , Mercury are the stepchildren! ha Chief

Greg why are you rebuilding it? I also have one that I have owned since 2005. The only thing I have ever had to do with it is change the gear oil once. And when she starts running a little rough, all I do is take out the needle on the bottom of carb and clean it out.

Unless it has been abused, not sure if your just creating work for yourself. And I have the manual. Its pretty much worthless.

My two cents.

Cheers

Rick,

It was our "every day car" for years of full time cruising starting in 2004, down the west coast & in the tropics. It got a LOT of hard work. I had a couple of tune-ups in the past. This year on the Florida west coast I put it on the new dink. It started up quickly, then I noticed it was leaking fuel (NOT GOOD) so shut it down. When I tried to restart it to run the fuel out of the carb, it would not start.

Now replacing cracked fuel tank, painting (again) the covers, and got the carb kit. We are waiting out the hurricane season and I have time to work on it. Our plans (carved in smoke) will put us out in remote areas and I want to be sure it works well! I can row, but sure do like it for fishing around the anchorages, and getting to that secluded beach, not to mention the dive spots and provisions. :D

Greg, man.. you have a tough life..
It's been bought and paid for by years of work and saving! :D

I plan to take after my grandfather......
One morning when I was visiting him he came out of his room and said, " I got them, I got those bastards". He said it a few times, with gusto!
finally, I asked, what do you mean??????

He said, "Today, I have been retired and drawing pay for longer than I worked for them!!"

My hero!!! :D:D:D:D:D

Quick update....

Thanks all for the words!
Just finished rebuilding the carb. Decided to not go deeper at this time. Treated it to a new fuel line and also a spark plug, FIRST one since new! :D

Needed to start & run it. Jill said, "take out the trash" and the idea hit me!! ;)

A little new fuel and it started on the second pull!!!!!
I am one happy guy now & ready for the next trip.
