Hello, I have owned a 1986 28.5' hunter for the last 4 years and have been very happy with it. Recently I have noticed several leaks that appear to be coming thru the joint between the deck and hull at the toe rail. I am wondering if anyone has experence fixing such leaks and would be willing to offer me some advise. I hope I do not have un-bolt and remove the toe rail to reseal this joint. I'm thinking about placing a small bead of 3M 4000 caulk at the joint between the vertical portion of the toe rail and the deck but I'm not confident this will do the job. Any advice?

Where my hunter had a leak

was in the bolts that held the toe rail on not in the seam itself.

Thanks

That's what I'm afraid may be the problem with mine. How did you fix your leak? I assume you had to take every bolt out and caulk the bolt holes. Did you have to completely remove the toerail?

Try this first

What you're describing is major. Before going to that effort, you might try to snug down all the toe rail bolts. That might be sufficient to stop the leak if its the bolt(s) or the seam.

I recently had the same problem...

...on my '79 h33. I was dreading the day I would have to pull all of the bolts fill the holes with silicone and reset the toe rail. Thanks to this website someone suggested retightening the bolts. To my surprise many were loose and when we tightened them the sealant installed by Hunter in '79 actually oozed out of the sides of the toe rail. There are no more leaks. Some of the bolts are tough to access, however, its all worth it. This is a two person job.

Great

I was just having the same problem. Everytime it rained my bilge was getting wet. I noticed the bolts under the toerail were wet. I was dreading this job. I thought I was going to have to put up with it for weeks till I could get to it. I'll try your method on the old Hunter 25 when I get back there. Stephen Fierro Captain of Calamity

Outboard flange

I would suggest that you first try tightening the nuts. DO NOT turn the screws, just tighten up on the nuts. You may need a deep socket on some of them. Your boat should be much easier than the earlier Cherubini's because you have an outboard flange. I would suggest that you get a very large phillips that can be held with a box wrench. Then have someone assist you in tighten all of the nuts. Try to not over-tighten. I think that these models also used a butyl type material to seal the joint. This stuff stay soft for a very long time, so you may never need to remove & recaulk (only do that as a last resort).

Thanks for the advice

Thanks. I'll try tightening all the bolts and report back regarding the outcome. With all the rain we are having it won't take long to find out.
