On the life vest, consider looking into a canoe or kayak vest. They're designed to wear sitting, while skiing vests are designed to wear standing.

That is a really good idea. If you leave it at a marina all rigged and just launch it then you have the best of both worlds in a lot of ways. I always wanted to do that but the marinas by me have some kind of fetish for having powerlines really close to their ramps or between the ramps and the storage area. I was better off upgrading because I spend substancial amounts of time aboard (7 days a month cruising during the nice months in one stretch and several other few day cruises).

You're a good dad, Steve. A couple of suggestions:
1. Be sure BOTH of you have really good life jackets and wear them anytime you're under way. And, teach your boy not only how to turn into the wind but also how to let the halyards run.
2. Try one of you in the v berth and the other on the long settee.
3. Just as a matter of discipline, I've developed a pre-sail checklist that I run through, same as pilots do on an airplane. It's laminated and sits in a cockpit locker. I run through it every time before I cast off the lines or up anchor. You might consider that. (One item on my list is "check fuel tank", even though I usually know pretty much what's in there.) On a trailer sailed boat that requires setup, the list could really help.
4. Any marina where you can leave the boat rigged in the parking lot and just back her in?
5. Keep a tight eye on your weather windows during this learning summer.

Whoops, one more thing. Your boat pix doesn't show a swim ladder. Is there a portable one on board? Can your son get to it and deploy it? One of my first trips out in an old O'Day 22, about the same size as yours, the wind died, it was HOT, and my buddy annouces he's going for a swim and over the side he goes. With no swim ladder, he couldn't get back aboard. Had to tow him to shore. Embarrassing.

yes we have a portable rope and plank ladder, my boy already used it to go swimming the first day
he doesn't know how or why to point into the wind, but he will first thing the next time we go out.... thanks!
the gas tank thing was unexpected, I topped it off when we put the boat in the water, I had no idea it only held a half a gallon... that's just crazy
I wish there was a way to put an external tank on it, I carry 7 gallons with me
there is dry storage at campland in mission bay, I'm going to check this weekend to see if I can leave it rigged there for the summer
I'll get us both safe sailing vests, we were pretty much the obnoxious wake boarding power boat types before, that's why we have that kind of gear
speaking of which... on the way back into the channel some 40 foot sportfisher came zooming in at top speed passing right along side us
he knocked us almost flat!... a bunch of our stuff fell out of the boat and I had to turn around and get it
maybe kharma... although I never did that to anybody

Steve, I'm in a "dry slip" with my H26, and for the money, I wouldn't have it any other way! I tried the trailer it every weekend approach and I really started to dread the task. With a dry slip, If your consistent and thorough when you put her to bed, the next time you launch will end up only taking a very short time. With my checklist and someone to help with the tow vehicle after splash, I'm under way in about 20-30 minutes of arriving at the marina, and that's with 3 kids, 12, 8, and 1.25 years old. Oh, that also includes the company of my commanding officer.:dance:
