Peggy, I have a Jabsco compact head in my Cat 30 which I installed 6 years ago. This past summer it started to malfunction. After flushing via the thru hull (out at sea) the sea water would come back in and fill the bowl to the top. Switch the "Y" valve over to the holding tank and it did not occur. Obviously there is a flapper valve that is gone in the discharge cycle of the head. Question is, should I purchase a rebuild kit or a new head. The cost of the kit (which hopefully has the flapper valve) is $75.00 Canadian and the cost of a new head is $150.00. Since I have never taken the head apart I am leaning towards a new head. Seems like a much easier and cleaner option. Cliff Carter PlusOne C30 #598 Oak Bay, B.C.

An Extra Part In The Jabsco Head

Peggie, I was able to pick up a new joker valve at West Marine and a vented loop set up for my head. When I disconnected the discharge outlet to get at the joker valve I found a round lead disk a little larger than a silver dollar that which sits in the open end of the joker valve. I tried to find it in the plan drawings of the head however there is nothing about it or why it is there. I am wondering if some how it came from elsewhere and ended up in the bowl and made it as far as the joker valve. Should it be there? Logic says it should not. Cliff Carter

No...it doesn't belong there...

If you've flushed solids and/or any TP, I don't know how they could have made it past it. Only two possible explanations for it..either someone dropped it in the toilet, flushed it and it made it that far, or it could be the weight off the "flap valve gasket" (part #21 on the drawing)....but it's a bit big to be a flapper valve weight weight. They're usually somewhere betweeen a nickel and quarter in diameter...and brass, not lead. That's not what's caused your flood, though...it prob'ly did more to slow down the rate of incoming water than anything else. If it IS the weight off the flapper valve, I'm beginning to think it's time to replace the toilet...the rebuild kit costs more than half a new one (which gives you an idea of the quality of the hardware)...joker valves are pretty much "universal," so you can just save it to use a couple of years from now.

Yup, Probably from the Weighted Flap

I had that happen too. As owner of one of the most expensive Jabscos around, I know of what I speak. The weights are large, and as you describe. They made a running change on them. The weights are now encapsulated rather than attached by adhesive to the rubber flap. Won't happen again with the newer version. Of course, there is plently else to go wrong and keep you on your knees in the "blessing throne" position... Rick D.
