To help or not?

I was in a small harbor over the weekend and witnessed something I was curious about. A small motor boat was in the harbor between two of the docks when it's motor quit. The boat was located between two docks and slowly being blown toward the end of one of the docks. While the boat drifted, a sailboat came along but did not offer any assistance. People sitting around with drinks in hand (not trying to help either) on their boats watching the whole thing had a lot of ill feelings for the sailboat captain for not assisting. I had a chance to talk with the people on the sailboat later and they explained that by the time they could have thrown a rope, the boat would have been resting up against the dock. If they had thrown them a rope, they would have towed them to a dock, resulting in the same ending. Since they did not see the boat as being in any danger, they decided to let the wind do the work it was already doing. My question is, is this a right course of action or not. Had there been a danger of the boat heading in to rocks or out to open water the captain said he would have aided. What is your opinions?

Always, when possible!

I get a bit of satisfaction towing in "stink pots" or giving them a jump off my battery banks as long as it's not unreasonable to do so. Helped one group twice in one day when the steering went out on the Pearson they were sailing! Picked one person off the Pearson and motored them to their nearby marina where they picked up a power boat...had to rescue them again 15-20 min. later when the power boat ran out of fuel!!!

I HELP WHEN I CAN.....BUT

I HAVE HAD ONE EXPERIENCE THAT LEFT A BAD TASTE IN MY MOUTH. I WAS TAKING MY WOODEN SKIBOAT TO AN ANTIQUE BOAT SHOW WHEN I WAS FLAGGED DOWN BY A MAN IN A SKIBOAT WITH SEVERAL CHILDREN AND A WOMAN. HE STATED HE WAS OUT OF GAS AND NEEDED A TOW. I TOWED HIM 8 MILES TO THE RAMP WHERE HE PROCEEDED TO JUMP OUT OF HIS BOAT AND WAVE "THANKS MAN". IT TOOK ABOUT 45" TO TOW HIM CAUSING ME TO MISS THE BOAT SHOW. I USED ALMOST HALF A TANK OF GAS AND ALSO PUT AN EXTREME STRAIN ON MY WOODEN BOAT. I STOPPED FOR THE CHILDREN AS THE DAY WAS IN THE 90'S. I WOULD HAVE APPRECIATED AT LEAST AN OFFER OF SOME $ FOR MY TIME/TROUBLE. IT IS EXCUSEABLE TO HAVE MECHANICAL FAILURES BUT TO GO OUT ON A DAY LIKE THAT WITH A BOAT LOAD AND INADEQUATE GAS IS PLAIN STUPID. I DO AND WILL CONTINUE TO OFFER ASSISTANCE TO BOATERS IN DISTRESS. WHEN I HAVE BEEN TOWED, I AT LEAST OFFER A SUM FOR THEIR TROUBLE.
