to buy an Ericson 35 as a beginning sailor?

I am convinced I am going to sail and keep a boat in Kachemak Bay, Alaska. I have an opportunity to buy, (after inspection), an Ericson 35 for 22,000 or so. I will be taking the full sailing certification course and they are on larger boats such as this. I want to continue to learn to sail on our own boat..is this a good model? We don't have many available here and this one stands out! Thanks alot for your encouragement and advice.

Great Boat but Has it been kept up to date

You don't say what year but I assume from the 70's at the price you are mentioning.The key to any older boat is how much equipment including the engine has been updated. If you have original sails they will very likely need replacing and this will be many thousands of dollars. Go over all instruments and other gear and try to give a realistic estimate of remaining life. Most electronics need replacing after 15 years.If the boat has been well maintained and not just cosmetics you should have a great deal. If not, you'd best price out replacement equipment so you know in advance.albert

Are you asking about whether the price is right for the boat or if that is the right boat for you?After having more boats than fingers and toes can count. Would suggest not only an inspection but to have the owner take you out sailing. If the owner backs down and doesnt give a good reason, then you need to look deeper.As for if its the right boat for you, i would suggest getting a copy of Don Casey book "This Old Boat" The first chapter is about choosing a boat. He has nine reasons for picking out a boat. Beauty, Cost, Use, Quality, Size, Design, accommodations, rig, power, and condition. He explains each one pretty good.If the boat is the one in your dreams, then its probably the boat for you.
