I live in Phoenix, but keep my 376 in SD. 6 weeks ago while heading out of the bay, there was a 35-40' ketch (full keel) on the beach on Pt Loma. I was just out there again 2 weeks ago and it still there. Does anybody know the story behind this? It looks like pretty nice boat. I cant imagine leaving it there. I would think someone would try to salvage it.

It has been there for about 6 weeks now..

The owner tried to enter the bay in a very thick fog. When he heard the sound of surf he figured he was in trouble. Then the motor failed and he knew he was in trouble. According to the San Diego Log he is now in the process of considering sueing one of the tow companies because it took them 45 min to get to him in the thick fog. The boat is a total loss. It would destroy it to try to drag it off the rocks. I believe the story said he also had no insurance!!

He should sue himself...

... for being a moron! 1. Entered the harbor in fog, unable to navigate. 2. Engine that wouldn't start. 3. Didn't occur to him to throw out the anchor, I guess. The rode was probably all balled up anyway. 4. No insurance! Thanks for telling the story.

A good lesson

Thanks for the post Dick. There's a good lesson in that story for all of us! As Paul said, nobody to blame but himself. I wonder if this guy was local? I was entering SD bay a few weeks ago motorsailing (no wind) when my raw water strainer got plugged. I was directly even with that wrecked boat and the flooding tide was pushing me into the bay. I had some trouble with my strainer and it took about 30 minutes to get things going again. All I could think about was that boat on the rocks as the tide pushed me in and I was trying to get the strainer cleared. It was quite a motivator to get the work done quickly.
