Tips for rigging a permanent tidal mooring

Hi,

I just bought a 2009 Mac 26M and have obtained a good swinging tidal mooring. It dries out by around 1 meter (chart datum) and is all thick mud.

I have no experience of setting up this kind of mooring and would appreciate some Mac specific tips.

The mooring buoy is fairly large and is well anchored to the bottom, buried in about 4 feet of mud .

Catalina Island Harbor has an interesting mooring system. The mooring buoys are anchored with heavy chain to old railcar wheels. They don't move! If memory serves me Cornwall and the South of England gets some pretty heavy weather. Are you near Fastnet? When Ted Turner (Yank) won the Fastnet race years ago, he was asked how he liked the weather. Referring to Spanish Armada he stated, "I loved it and you #&^$%&* should too, or you'd be speaking Spanish now!" (Paraphrased)

Yes we live on the Fastnet route, I've never done it apart from Virtual but I've a cousin who competes every time.

My daughter lives in Mission Viejo so she's a Catalina local. In fact we visited the old Mac factory in Costa Mesa when we were out there last time. Capt. Mike Inmon kindly showed us around.

I'm getting up to speed on secure moorings now so I'll be investing in the hardware next week.

May well go for 1/2 inch chain supplemented by a heavy nylon strop.
