I have purchased a used mast for to replace our bent one,
but it weighs around 120 lbs. Our old mast weighs a third of that.
I never realized what a wisp of a mast these lightweight macs have.

I can strip the new mast of the extremely heavy duty hardware it has on it and save maybe 10 lbs, and after cutting off 4 feet to match previous mast length that might take another 15 lbs but this thing will still be heavy!

Will this boat still be safe to sail in 25 mph of wind? I can't really judge previous stability because we've always sailed with blown out baggies.

Can I offset by adding weight to the floor of the boat?

I have a mast from a V21 that I will give to you.... also has SS standing rigging. I think that the V21 mast is a few feet too short but you might be able to make it work. I'm a long way from CheeseLand but it is yours if you want it.

I think your subject title hits the nail on the head TC. That is a LOT of extra weight to carry aloft. Just my $.02

Do you know what boat the new mast came from? It probably has a thicker wall, so it will be heavier, but I think your estimates of the original weight might be off. If you can post pictures of your original mast (just one of the ends so we can see the profile) along with its exact length, then do the same for the new mast. We might be able to figure out exactly what it should weigh. I only think your estimate is a little off because my C-22 mast is almost 90 pounds with all hardware attached, so for your V24 it would be just a little more.
FYI, some older models of boats used lighter mast cross sections. I have two masts for my C22 that came from older boats and they have a teardrop type cross section, much lighter and bendy, racers use them. They stopped using those masts in the late 70's and went with a flat sided

Yeah - a pretty great bunch here no doubt about it.
Out of all the different subject forums I am a member of
the sailor orientated ones are by far the most intelligent and civil.
