Time to replace my toilet

Hi Peggy,

The last install with the Raritan manual head in my Moody 44 fwd head worked out great. Now for the aft cabin one as its beginning to annoy me. I'd like to install a Raritan Elegance Marine Toilet With Smart Flush Control using raw water (since I don't have fresh water to spare and the idea of using the flush control makes sense so the other users get the flush right). My question is ... if I am replacing a manual head (Jabsco) that has the the right hoses and heights etc ... do I also need an electric vent added?

Thanks in advance

Looking forward to yet another project!

Dan

Electric vent? What's that? Are you thinking of an electric vented loop in the input line to the raw water pump, because the toilet will be below the water line of the boat? I'm not sure what you are referring to. Here's a link to the Marine "Elegance" Owner's/Installation Manual, perhaps you'll find your answer in it. Otherwise pass along a little more info on what you're referring to, and we'll try to help.

Yes - electric vented loop. My previous boat had one between the raw water supply and the toilet and I didn't know if it is recommended or necessary. The current toilet is below the water line.

What you're actually asking about is...

A solenoid valve in a vented loop...an electrically operated air valve. Whether that solenoid valve is needed or not depends on whether or not a vented loop is needed in the intake AND where it can be located. They aren't needed in toilets that use onboard pressurized flush water, but if a toilet that uses sea water will be at or below the waterline, an intake vented loop is needed. Manual toilets and most basic electric toilets have a hose that connects the pump to the back of the bowl...which is where the vented loop belongs. When it can go there, there's no need for a solenoid valve. But all china "thrones" like the Elegance don't have that connecting hose...any vented loop has to go between the thru-hull and the pump...in which case, you'd most likely need that solenoid valve. Read the part of the installation instructions that pertain to adding a remote intake pump--which is necessary if you want to use raw water to flush the Elegance--to see what's what.

All that said...IMO you'd be a LOT happier with the Elegance if we can find a way to increase the amount of fresh water available for toilet flushing...or maybe build it with the "sea fresh option" that will reduce the amount of FRESH water needed enough to let you have it both ways.
