Time To Fix the Trailer

After a long trip, I have decided to make some changes on my boat trailer. I want a ladder on the front, a spare tire mount, and new bunk boards. I have already relocated my axle. I walked down a line of trailers at a boat ramp, and the item I really liked was a double bow roller stop that hinges in the middle. I was thinking about covering my wooden bunks with something other than carpet, maybe HDPE plastic sheet. I was thinking about 2x6's instead of 2x4's as well. Any other ideas? My trailer has very little corrosion as it never sees salt water. I'll paint it with POR 15 when I am done. John S

wiring

If you haven't already, consider rewiring with all new wire. Maybe putting your lights up high enough they don't go in the water. Or if not, maybe replacing the incandescent with the new LED type. Your no carpet idea is atrtractive but I wonder if the HDPE sheet might rub off on the hull if hat and dry?

Bow support

I'm trying to add some sort of support to lift the bow up when I'm putting teh boat back on the trailer. I'm trying to come up with some sort of crossmember with a roller on it to put in between the rails of the trailer about a foot or two behind the tongue. Getting the boat back on the trailer is the worst part of the whole sailing experience.

Winch too low?

Stan, look at the winch position. If your trailer is like mine the winch is too low and pulls the bow down instead of up. You might consider moving the winch or adda pulley to bring the line up instead. Just my thoughts. Steve

Trailer mods

I have the 26D with stock trailer which I modified slightly. I reversed the winch so the belt enters over the top and I added a roller about 2 feet back mounted on a cross member of Trex manufactured wood. The combo works pretty well. I like John's idea of the HDPE sheet over the bunks, if it would wear reasonably well. Jim

Waaaay over the top. boat, and trl. I like the motor mounted up front... notice the guides. the ladder up front would be nice, seen it on some stock trls... I'm going to cover my iron cross members with pvc so maybe I stop marking up the bow gelcote. the extended tounge is another nice to have.

I copied his motor mount last year

I liked his motor mount when I saw it, too. My transom had some cracks in it, so I thought it would be better to take the strain off of it when trailering. Some people say it's better for the tongue weight, too, but I can't really tell.

brakes

Just wondering if anyone out there has made the disc brake conversion. BWY has the whole set up for less than $300.

Trailer bunk covers

Has anyone considered or have experience using the trailer bunk cover material that is available for jet ski trailers? It is UHMW Polyethylene with very low coeff. of friction and good abrasion resistance. It is available from Personal Watercraft Accessories in CA. Jim

caution on plastic

I've seen some websites from plastics manufacturers and distributors which state that HMW plastics are not for outdoor use because they deteriorte under UV exposure. Some HMW composites have UV protection added for outdoor use.

U V Protection

HDPE plastic is available in a UV resistant form. Any plastic is probably more resistant to rot than carpet. John S
