Hi, we just posted this on the cruisers site, and thought we'd ask here also. We're planning to spend 6 months in the Bahamas. We tend to travel fairly fast, not spending weeks in one spot. Is 6 months way too long, or not nearly enough time? Thanks for any thoughts or comments.

I believe that it depends on your interests. Nancy and I were down in Grand Bahama for a couple of days and hired a driver to give us a tour of the island. We saw his village and a couple of state parks and a sink hole cave. We could have cheerfully spent a week looking in depth at the places we just sort of skimmed over. We didn't go to a single club/casino. We ate locally, surveyed a super market/ grocery store, we left foot tracks and took away memories.

Six months won't be enough if you're cruising. I assume you're taking your boat! :) It depends on what your interests are and whether you like to move every day or enjoy whatever anchorage you might be in. There's certainly lots of islands and you won't do them all in six months. I've been cruising there since 1990 and still return every winter. The cruising life is at a much slower pace than life ashore. But the months just fly by. If you like dinking around exploring, fishing, beach combing for treasures, snorkeling you won't have enough time. If you prefer sightseeing on land, there won't be much to see. If you don't like living on a boat it'll be too long, if you like cruising it won't be long enough. The waters are breathtaking.

Spent three weeks over in the Abacos this summer. Wish I could get away for six months, I would still not get to see everything I want to!

Enjoy,

Your interests and 'time constraints' will undoubtedly change once in the Bahamas, mon.

Suggest you arrive/enter there by at least 1 December to avoid the 'equinoctal gales, "northers", etc'. and then go as far 'south' to the Southern Exumas, Raggeds, Acklins, Turks & Caicos, etc. and then begin start traveling 'north' as the 'season' and weather permit/develop to travel 'back up' to Eluthera, Exumas, Abacos, etc. Every year is different with predominant winds and temps ..... just be prepared to 'go with the flow', rather than against it 'being on a schedule' - once there be VERY flexible.

700 islands and definitely not enough time to see and enjoy it all in one single 'winter'. Take your time and enjoy.

:)
