Well, in my never ending battle -- On the metal tillers -- what do y'all use so that you do not have to hold on to the bare metal. Previously there was a kind of rubber grip, but that's gone now. I tried some of that rubber paint, but sure didn't like the way it came out. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Fancy work

You might try some fancy work such as French hitching, St. Mary's hitching or ringbolt hitching. Not only would it solve your metal problem, give a good handsome hand grip; but you would also be following a long held naval tradition. As I recall all the ships I was ever stationed on had fancy work on all rails etc. The hitching I have done used ~ 1/8 inch cotton twine (?) covered, sealed and protected by many coats of white paint. French hitching would be the easiest but I think that St.Mary's would look the best. Jerry s/v Shapieron

Handlebar ribbon

I used the type of soft ribbon normally used for racer bicycle handlebars, gives a good, soft and varm grip.

Fancy Work

Well, I'm sure it would look great - but there's no way I could do it. I might look into the handlebar stuff -- that I could probably do! :)

I got tired of the metal tiller and

ordered a wooden replacement tiller. It's nice. Another thought. Get a tiller extension, That'll keep your hands off the metal. No matter what you use... go sailin. Hayden

Tiller extension

"Get a tiller extension" I do have one and love -- I like sitting up on a stern seat and sailing -- though if the weather gets rough I come down.

this type of fancy work is a piece of cake. A broom handle, some twine and 15 minutes you'll be an expert. A knot book such as Knots for Boaters by Brion Toss shows you how.

Leather

You could try a leather wrap. Perhaps even some 1/8 to 1/4 inch foam under it for some cushion.
