The tiller on my H26 wobbles at the attachment to the rudder. It appears the plastic on either side by the bolt that holds it to the rudder has disappeared. Any suggestions on how to fix for a landlubber in Kentucky?

I replaced the tiller shims on our 23.5 a few years ago with plexyglass that I got at Lowe's. It works well, seems to wear well, is UV resistant, and is a fraction of the cost of the original material, which, if I recall, is high-density polypropalene.

I am trying to fix the same wobble issue. I still have the shims and bolts, and was thinking of replacing with a thicker material,- thanks for the plexiglass idea. As I looked at them, and I took apart the housing at the top of the rudder,I noticed the rubber lining (between the metal and the rudder) was torn and worn away. This is my first year with the 23.5, is this something I need to look to replace or is it reparable?

Look at the bolt that goes thru the two plates and aluminum tiller, they have a tendency to wear.I had a bushing welded in hole, tightened up play.happens alot if you slip boat and tie off tiller.Best to tie rudder.

Look back a few weeks, as there was recently a thread on this very topic.

I am also repairing the rudder on the 1988 H23 I bought with similar "wobble". I am not sure if it is like yours, it has a fiberglass over foam body with an aluminum shell bracket (to pivot & kick up) with welded on gudgeons, the pintles are on the transom. On thing I can tell you is that the hole where the 5/16" bolt went through the fiberglass/ foam was worn away oversize as were the holes (corroded also) through the aluminum. Same situation for the wood tiller and its bolt making the whole thing very wobbly. I am replacing with a 1/2" SS bolt with brass bushings in the fiberglass and bushings through added on 1/4" aluminum plates over the existing holes. Should be way cheaper than a new rudder/tiller.
