Tiller Tamer

I'm looking at the $25 tamer on this site. I have a tiller extension that can lock the tiller in place, but it's a lot of trouble every time you need to make a minor adjustment.What I'd like to know is, with a tiller tamer, can you move the tiller a couple of inches, and it will stay there, without loosening the grip on the line? If you have to release the tension, move the tiller and then retighten, I don't want to mess with it.I'm talking about lighter winds, say up to 10 mph, where weather helm is not much factor.Thanks,Mac

Here's the one that I use

I know a couple sailors who have broken their plastic Davis Tiller Tamer. Hey Mac,

The BEST tiller tamer is a rope tied from one side of your boat to the other, with a couple of loops around your tiller, loose at back end, taught when you pull it towards the handle part of tiller. Works great, learned about it on this site. Should be in archives.Its so simple, and yet works so well, I don't know why anyone would spend a nickle on anything else!

George and Rick:Thanks for the information on the cheapie tiller tamer!!!I’m still experimenting but think it’ll work well. I’m using cotton clothesline with four wraps on the tiller and will try about six inches of shock cord at each end, fastening to the lifeline attachments on the fore end of the stern rails.Pauls/v The Lord Nelson
