Tiller Tamer

Any suggestions for a tiller tamer for 19' waterballast? I bought a Davis tamer tiller some years back but it requires drilling into wood; not sure if it would work on aluminum tiller handle anyway.

I use a Davis Tiller Tamer on my 23.5. I'm not sure if the 19 uses the same diameter tiller, but I use two 1 7/8" stainless steel muffler clamps and a small piece of teak to attach it to the tiller. I position the clamps, attach the piece of teak using the nuts on the clamps, then screw the tiller tamer to the wood. It works great and looks pretty tidy too. You can get the stainless muffler clamps from JC Whitney (online) or various auto parts outlets.Good LuckAlan

My Hunter 23.5 came with a tiller tamer

mounted directly to the aluminum tiller and it work fine.Hayden

Cajun tiller tamer

Someone wrote in recently with a question on how to temporarily stabalize the tiller for sail handling, etc. Among the answers was one from a Louisianan describing a "Cajun tiller tamer." I rigged one on my H26. He had a photo. I'll try to describe it. You tie a 5/16" line from a stern pulpit stanchion, lead it to the forward end of the tiller with some tension on the line, wrap it firmly around the tiller a few times, and lead it to the stanchion on the other side with a tauntline hitch, again, putting on some tension.(The tauntline hitch allows you to adjust it if necessary). When sailing, move the wraps back to the aft end of the tiller. The line goes slack and you can steer normally. To hold the tiller, push the wraps forward until the line is tight. Works great!
