The lines from my tiller stay have become badly weathered. I was wondering if anyone has ever replaced these lines? How do you take it apart? thanks in advance

tiller stay

this is also a tiller tamer. I just bought the boat this summer and I am using the term that is used in the catalina direct owners handbook.

Sorry, can't help you then

I don't have one of the tiller tamers (or for that matter a Cat 22). Have you tried calling Cat Direct?

Call the Catalina Direct tech support line. They are very helpful.

pull out the old-thread in the new

sorry to state the obvious, but taking a look at the picture of this simple device, it appears you simply loosen the top knob, then untie the stays on each side and pull the rope out. You should be able to thread a new line through the device quite easily. In any event, it looks like you can't do any damage unless there are springs in side, which I doubt. Just go for it.

Tiller Stay

There is an interesting discussion about your issue over on the Catalina Direct web site. Nevertheless, assuming you do indeed have a Tiller Stay, I beleive the only recourse you have is to get a new unit. However, go see the discussion over at the Catalina Diredt site. You can see how I set up my Tiller Stay on my Catalina 22 at the link below. Scroll down the page to see it in the second picture. Note: the grey plastic cleat on the tiller is now more forward on the tiller so I can more easily release and reset the Tiller Stay when tacking. There are turning blocks now on each side of the tiller where the cleat is seen in the picture.

tiller stay

thanks for the advice and the pictures of your mountings. I bought the boat with the tiller stay already installed above the lazerette covers which is a giant pain. I wasn't able to find the discussion on the catalina direct site.

pull out the old thread

I agree you would think that this would be an easy fix. However, the stay is spring loaded and it seams to be permanently sealed and I can't get the lines out of the housing.
