I finally got one of the quick release things that will pop open if my rudder hits something. I can't think of the names of things. Anyway the rope has to be about 1/4" but the problem I have is, the rope is guided up through the rudder/tiller shaft and comes out up top. How do you keep the rope from wearing on the edge, it's very sharp and I must have broken 3 ropes last year at least. Do you have a small block mounted on the tiller to prevent the wear? What about the bottom?

This is on a 26S

I mounted my Auto Clam Cleat to the rudderhead itself, so I have to hang over the transom a little to re-cleat the downhaul.
If yours is routed inside the rudderhead, you've got some extra engineering to make it happen.
I'll bet there's a small type of control line block that'd work out there, somewhere.

I have the Ida post riser so my setup won't help.
You should have a square plastic bushing inside the top of your OEM post. The line shouldn't chafe.

My Auto release cam cleat was also mounted on the side of the rudder channel and had a small block a the bottom.

Our boat (26S) came with a stainless cable that is covered and it works fine. You could make up one of these at a WM or a rigger or if you have a swage tool yourself. You swage a loop in both ends and use a large SS washer and a SS bolt down on the rudder to secure the cable there. Works very well.

I've since replaced the line from the cable that goes to the cam cleat,

When you pull your rudder up, does the rope to cable connection go down into the shaft? I guess I could use cable clamps for this little job. I guess while I am there I can look for a small vertical block too.

To the others, my rudder shaft is like Sum's it's internal through the laz and not mounted out like yours.

Yes through the shaft,

Sorry I meant does the connection itself go down (potentially getting stuck in the shaft)

No the loop at the end of the cable doesn't go down into the shaft. The cable is sized length wise to prevent that.

I tried to find a picture of how it is hooked to the rudder with no luck. Our rudder is an Ida Sailor and there is a 1/4 inch bolt through the rudder where the cable connects and it just rides against the side of the rudder and is held there with a large SS fender washer. There is a nylock nut on the bolt so there is a little slack for cable movement,

Doc, at the top bolt the original setup included a sleeve of stainless over the bolt that acts like a roller (but doesn't roll) to keep the cable (or now rope) from hitting the edge of the pipe. The rope should come up on the transom side of the rudder post (closer to the back) and not up in the near side by the cockpit. That way it goes over the sleeve instead of the lip edge of the post. Hope that explanation helps.

Thanks, I am going to play around with it a little. Right now between trying to get this kitchen done, pancreatitis and a kidney stone, I'm very disappointed I am not yet in the water. I have taken a few minutes to get a few things done. I built and installed my Chartplotter swing mount, replaced my 4 switch panel to a 6, installed a Davis Sparfly, But I still have a lot to do including scraping and getting a couple coats of bottom paint on. Right now she's sitting in the driveway with the mast up.

After converting our rudder from a one piece to a kick-up last month, I added a wall/ceiling mount single pulley. I bolted it through the under side of the tiller using the ceiling mount holes. The aft part of the pulley is maybe an inch from the upper portion of the rudder. From the lower section, the line runs up through the gap in the pintles, over the pulley and then back to the Sea Dog self releasing clamcleat which is mounted under the tiller. It worked like a charm! Upside down. Of course this isn't one of those fancy 26 jobs. I have a 1975 Venture 25.
