tiller question

I installed my tiller tamer this weekend and noticed that the set screw that adjust the tiller lift position is striped out. My boat is in its slip and I need to remove the tiller and it's bracket to retap the set screw. My question is this! If I remove the bolt and nut that connects the tiller to the rudder post is there any other fastner that will keep or hold the rudder post in position or will the whole thing just drop to the bottom of the marina? So is this a repair that can be done in the water? or should I wait and pull it before I attempt it? The white plastic board is getting scraped up really bad so I resorted to putting a towel underneath it till I can get it repaired.

No Problem

Removing the tiller is no problem - there is another bolt (thru a white plastic collar) about halfway down the rudder post that holds the rudder assembly to the boat. On my 240, the tiller lift screw was also stripped/bent - I just removed it and did not replace. The white plastic under the tiller was gouged by a weld bead on the bottom of the tiller - I filed that smooth to prevent further gouging of the plastic.

starboard

Thanks Steve, I guess I'll repair next week end. Is that white plastic board the stuff every oner is referring to as starboard?
