Does anyone have any experience or opinions on a good tiller pilot for a Vega? I was thinking of the RayMarine ST1000. There is a manual for a Simrod in the files. Did someone have that unit?

Thanks

My Raymarine 2000T crapped out after maybe 150 hours of easy use. Cost me
$300 to fix. Maybe that's par.

I have a Simrad TP 10.
Very happy with it.
Never used for more than 3-4 hours without a break.
Once I eliminated a bad earth connection in 12V supply it steers the boat well under sail as well as engine even on reasonably breezy days.

It may be marginal for the Vega?
I located the cup that takes the pin well aft of the cockpit locker cover based on advice here.
Went against Simrad installation guide but worked well.

The TP30 with recirculating ball drive instead of worm screw is more powerful, prob much more efficient - less friction etc- but much more expensive.

I have the old Navico (now Simrad)recirculating ball model, the extra lock
to lock speed was useful when sailing off the wind in a breeze and some
seas, otherwise I think the less expensive models would work. Reef early,
reef often. It's also mounted aft of the cockpit locker lid. The compass
did fail, and had to have it replaced.

I had an ST1000 which wore out, so upgraded to an ST2000+. It's the same setup, but a lot stronger inside. I posted the Simrad manual in the files section. One came with the boat, and although it works well, I prefer the ST2000 as it will follow a track from the GPS.
