Thinking about a TP for my O-23. Anyone experienced in mounting one? Looks like the likely spot would be on the gas tank locker hatch, but I'm wondering if it is strong enough?? Later Ed

Strengthen the Hatch.

I have a Simrad TP10 for my O'day27 and use it almost every time I go out. I single hand a lot with it and now I am really spoiled It makes the boat even more enjoyable. I have it mounted on the Lazarette hatch. I didn't think just the hinges would be strong enough so I glassed in 2x4 blocks under the hatch itself at all 4 corners and in the middle area so they meet the frame when the hatch is closed, which gave it considerably more strength. I also put one where the pin socket is mounted and then drilled into it when I mounted it. It is now a supper strong installation and is used reliably in the strong winds of SF bay. Hope this helps, Good luck. Dave

Good idea Dave

Hi Ed - Dave is spot on in singing both the merits of a tillerpilot and the need to make sure the mounting area is strong enough to endure the load of the pilot. If you have the room under the locker hatch, I would recommend following his advice and glassing in a pad to mount the base to. Have fun! Trevor

The blocks at the corners of the frame are a good idea. Hadn't thought about that. The block for the pin is now reccomend in the install instructions. My only other concern is if the latch for the hatch will affect the fluxgate compass? The gas tank is plastic so I think that should be ok. I too singlehand a lot so I'm really thinking this would be a good investment. Later Ed

Should be fine

I don't have a problem with my latch giving the fluxgate compas any problems. I think it is fine unless it is magnetic or caries electrical current. Just go for it, you will love it. One thing that I wish I did was to Get the Simrad TP20 which can connect to the NMEA output of my Handheld GPS (to steer to Waypoints) and also has a wired remote. I didn't think I'd ever use those features but now that I take the boat out more often, I wish I had the opportunity to control the boat from the rail, mast or bow. Cheers. Dave.

Good point

I have been mulling over if I should part with the money to upgrade. Maybe I should in that case. Hate to get the 10, then wish I had the 20. Thanks Ed
