I need info on tiller pilot for H27 1979. Has anyone installed one and how well does it handel weather helm on this boat? I plan to use it mostly when making sail changes as this boat seams a little hard to tie of rudder and hold coarse. Have been sailing in New York harbor for remainder of season with lots of commercial trafic and chop. Boat seams to handle conditions very well and have been using a storm sail with reefed main in order to stay upright. Boat skips right along but handeling sails and steering is tricky. Other choice is to run lines to cockpit and install furler but would rather not make those investments at this time. ...cheers frank

Simrad TP10 Tiller Pilot

We bought a TP10 after seeing one installed on an h27 at a Cherubini Hunter rally at Middle Bass Island about 5 years ago. It just works, no problems (except in strong following seas when any autopilot might struggle.)

Installation was reasonably simple:
- Screwed the ball fixture they provided as recpmmended on the tiller.
- Screwed the threaded black disk to hold the rod that supports the back of the unit to the side of the cockpit.
- Installed a 12 volt plug (lighter style) in the cockpit below the seat, and wired it to an unused switch/fuse in our electric panel.

I've used it to change sails while single handing, and we almost always use it when we have to motor. We have probably sailed/motored 900 miles with it doing the steering.

Good luck - an autopilot is a great value to a cruiser, especially if you single hand.

Re: Simrad TP10 Tiller Pilot

Thank you David, I have located several on line for around 300 bucks ...cain't go wrong. Seems I have found sweat spot on this boat. Reefed main and 110 head sail made easy work of 10 to 15 gusting to 20+. Rudder feels firm but effortless and boat feels ballanced cutting through 2 to 3 foot rollers blowing past the Battery yesterday...thanks again Frank
