i've decieded i am going to get a tiller pilot since i mostly singlehand. what all do i need? i see the simrad tp10 has a bit more torque so am leaning that way. is having the remote worthwhile or just a gadget? what am i going to need in the way of brackets? suggestions, experiences, parts lists appreciated. i have not ruled out the raymarine 1000 w/ or w/o remote either. has anyone installed either on an h23? tia

Just finished my install on a H240

Hopefully the H23 is similar but I don't know much about them. The specs are better for the Simrad but I wanted the remote and NMEA capability of the ST1000, although it is a much more complicated installation. I wrote it up in the link below.

Tiller holding short term

A couple of post previous to this I described the success I have had with a Forespar 27"-48" telescoping tiller extension with homemade Lock-Boxes attached to the stanchions port and starboard of the end of the tiller. You can quickly set this rig to hold the boat close to course while you attend to other things. Naturally it will not hold you on course forever as the electronic systems do. My system is pretty simple and works easily.

tiller autopilot

I have had the ST1000 for a couple of years and would not be without it. (sorry know nothing onthe tp1o) I picked the ray as it has the LCD displace which is handy when initially setting it up and easy to tell if it is in auto or manual with a glance. Power useage is minimal (as long as your rudder is pulled all the way down). Hopefully the link below works, go to the boat spec page for the 240 and look for photo projects (I could not find them via the archives). per the post, I made my own brackets for the tiller which was held on by hose claps but now have a H&L tiller so has drilled and mountered, rest is on the link. Nothing else needed, made my own supper bracket for homedepot for 10 bucks vs 40. nothing else needed. I ran my power down from the locker and under the floor then up to the power supply, saves a lot of work. great investment. it will soon become your first mate and releive being tied to the tiller or worse your partner.

ordered the raymarine 1000+ w/remote

thanks guys. i flipped a coin and went w/ the raymarine 1000+ on the grounds that there is more of them out there and i will probably pick-up a spare unit. (i do high tech equipment maintenance so i am always uneasy if i don't have spare parts). torque is a little less than the simrad but should still be overkill for my h23. i got it with remote because i figure sure as sh1t i'll end-up wanting it someday if i didn't. MikeB, i printed your great installation article...thanks it will be a great help. besides, you're an hour away so if i run into a snag i may pay you a visit to look at yours.:) thanks everybody

Raymarine

I went with the Raymarine on my h26. Can't remember if it's the 1000 or 2000? I liked having the display. Makes programming and use easier. I also singlehand a lot. The autopilot is my favorite addition to the boat. Can appreciate the idea of having a spare, but that's a lot of cash to backup a piece of equipment that isn't actually needed for sailing. Of course it's your money. ;-) Ron Mehringer h26 Hydro-Therapy

Come on up anytime William

The boat's in the backyard for now. I might want to get to Pueblo sometime this summer. I went last year and the water level must have been down about 60'. How is it doing so far this year?

we're still down but not as bad

we gained +22' beginning of summer but springs had been steadily sucking at that! sailing has been fair.....ON THE DAYS I WORK! this weekend i had company and it is like fall around here. :(. i'm fairly mechanicaliy/technically adept so invision no installation problems but if you get down this way let me know.
