My wife and I are very new to the sailing game. Purchased a 2005 Hunter 27 this summer. We noticed we can't seem to extend the main sail as it goes (with the in mast sailing) the blue line is at the max on spindle. The sail has a big curve when sailing, good for light wind, not so much with high wind. How do we tightened the sail?

could have used better description or a photo...

but I'll take a stab at helping. Maybe it will spur some others to chime in.

On your question of "How do we tighten the sail?", I assume you mean that you have it unfurled all the way out of the mast. If that is the case, you need to use the outhaul line to pull the back end of the sail out to the back end of the boom. You should be able to get the sail almost flat by doing that. If it is all the way out and you cannot get it flat with the outhaul, maybe it is not the correct sail for the boat (too big).

As to your statement "the blue line is at the max on spindle", the blue line on my boat is a continuous loop, so I have a different setup than yours. The blue line is used to furl the mainsail, not pull it out. You pull it out with the outhaul line. My jib furler has a single furling line, and sometimes when setting up the boat for the season you need to either unwrap a few turns or wrap a few more turns to get the line in the correct length to fully furl the sail back up when you pull on the furling line to roll the sail back in. Perhaps you neeed to see if that would help.

Not sure what the blue line is either and how your furler is set up. On our 33, the furling line is a continuous loop. I think yours is a single line similar to the jib furler, which in that case would mean rolling up the main and detaching the outhaul and roll the main in some more to take up the furling line and then reattach the outhaul. I would try to get a manual for your mast to determine the proper proceedure for this.

Thanks for the comments, was not trying to be cryptic. The outhaul is all the way out yet there appears to be room on the boom for corner of the sail and the clip to move further out. You are correct the blue line furls the sail, but when the sail is out the spindle is full, I wonder if we have a loop rather than a single line.

Hi Doug,
Had good trip to gut on Sunday. Pretty big waves, but no issues. Hope you had a good sail.

It was sunny and glorious fall weather. Too bad no trees yet! Fair winds my friend. Do not get too far away.
