Thull-hull wood backing

After 16 years some of my stock thru-hull wooden backings are starting to rot/deteriorate. Question is why use wood backing in the first place? Thru-hulls at bilge area do get wet from time to time.

Cheaper and easy to install. Will hold up for a while. Then need replacement.

Replaced mine on a ‘88 Hunter. Used 3/4” plywood that was coated with polyester resin & Matt with end grain soaked with resin. If I were doing it again, would probably use G10 laminate. Replaced thru hull fittings at same time.

Yes, good time to do a complete replacement of the thru-hull. GROCO now makes a pre-cut backing plate with threaded inserts for the flange bolts. LINK

I followed Maine Sail's recommendations and ...

.... made our backing plates. I have the whole install on my site here ....

... and Maine Sail has an excellent description of the same procedure (that I pretty much followed) on his site also.
