I close all 5 thru-hulls on my 29.5 whenever leaving her for a day, week or longer. A practice learned from a former owner. The raw water valve is most difficult, being under the aft berth. Checking with several sailing buddies’ revealed I’m the only one who does so. I'd like to hear what others practice and why? V.R. George Greenauer S.V. Sail Mary!

close them

I close mine especially the raw water intake on my 29.5. I didn't used to. They were so new and never had a problem -- until I did. The gasket in my perko raw water strainer failed and a leak developed. the bilge pump handled it ok for a few days and fortunately a boat neighbor phoned me to say the pump was running frequently. When I discovered the problem I vowed to close them in the future. Now i sleep well when home. I hang my engine keys on the handle to the seacock. No way to forget to open or close the valve that way. Fair sailing Bill Murray S/V Good Faith h29.5

You just never know

We're with you on this one... My husband and I have always closed all of the seacocks when we leave the boat. One person checks that all of the seacocks are closed while the other checks the hatches and ports are closed. It's become a habit, it's quick, and if something goes wrong... no worries. And as my husband just said, do you want to trust your $30,000 boat (or any price boat for that matter) to a $1 hose clamp or $5 worth of hose? Here's to a good night's rest when you leave her at the dock, Canadice & Robb "Great Blue" 1993 H28 Fort Worth, TX

Close them

I always close them , even if I am coming back the next day. In fact, I always close the boat up when I intend to come back the next day just in case something comes up or the weather changes. Hate making a 3 hr. drive round trip just to secure the boat.

Close 2

I always close them when leaving the boat. On an occasion or two I have realized that I left one open and worried until I returned or got a friend to close it up. I agree with the other monetary analysis, and its not really that hard to do
