Thru Hull Transducer port - repurpose

Hello all, On my hunter 26, there is two of the pictured thru hulls already in place. Do any of you know where I can find a fitting that would convert this to a FNPT bushing to accomodate a brass ball valve? I would like to use it to pull lake water up onto the boat via a pump. I do not need the transducer anymore, but would like to avoid installing a new thru hull.

What you're looking for is a bronze coupling :

This will be a NPS thread (thru hull) to a NPT thread (coupling) which is not kosher but 99% of all production boats do it. If your want to use a smaller valve, use a bronze reducer coupling :

However after having said all that, why can't you screw the valve on to the existing thru hull as you will still need to insert a close nipple to attach the valve ?

On further looking at your post, I see it's a transducer thru hull. If it's by any chance it's plastic, don't even think of doing it. The plastic is not strong enough to hold the fittings.
Ah bummer, It is for a transducer, shoot. I guess I will be forced to remove that transducer and replace it with brass. or install a whole new one. Im open to ideas on how i can pull fresh water up onto the boat without a thru-hull installation. that kinda makes me nervous thinking about installing one. Maybe a piece of pex piping hanging off the back just by the water line but not below the boat line so it is not exposed to the current when underway? just trying to think out side the box here.

Thanks!

Any other thru hulls on the boat ? Inboard engine, flushing head, something I haven't thought of ?

This from your owners manual.

If accessible, I would put in TEE in that line/hose, but below loaded boat water level.

Hopefully the thru hull valve is reachable under the Galley sink

If you are really ambitious, you can remove the fresh water jug under the sink, and hand pump it fresh water to the sink from the new TEE.

or

Wire up a small 12 DC water pump and use it as needed.

Jim,

The thru hull drains for both the galley and head are pretty high up from the water line.and really cant imagine that changing enough with the boat being loaded or not So I cant think of how this would work.

Thanks for the ideas and the research thou. appreciate it really.

Think out of the box , as you said.

Where is Will there is a Way

Example is to lift/suck it up with the right water pump.

The right water pump can lift about 4 feet.;)

Removing the transducer through hull should not be difficult unless the prior owner used 5200.

Just do the job correctly using proper fittings of bronze or Marelon.

What's it for? For a deck wash down pump, sure just toss a hose over the side when you want to use it.
You should be able to grind out the old transducer fitting pretty easy. The easiest way is to grind off the inside corners just far enough that the ring flush with the hull can be removed separately from the tube. Then the ring and tube will come off more readily, even with 5200. Use a chisel for the ring. Cut the tube into pieces if necessary.

If you do not want the transducer then damaging it during the removal is not a big deal.

Take a hole saw just under the diameter of the transducer hole and drill it out. The other parts will break away and you will have a hole that you can clean up and install the desired through hull.

The hole size for most transducers is rather large. I would be inclined to not mess with it. You can get a 3/4" valve and through hull that will serve the purpose you have out of Marelon. Then you can put the hole where it is most needed. Perhaps it can even do more than one purpose. A source of water for the pump and a drain when not being used to suck up lake water.

Bear in mind, repairing a large hole in the hull from a transducer is a fairly major project. Either stick the transducer back in and leave or replace the thru-hull with a proper thru-hull and ball valve.

This is a Hunter 26. The depth transducer plug also seals for the paddle wheel plug for speed. you have to switch the plugs out it’s just aft of the water ballast tank.

If all you want is depth, why not mount one off the back of your transom the way power fishing boats do. It would be a lot less work, and if later you want depth and or speed you still have the original plug.

I think you want something like this…skin fitting, goes through the hull, nut holds it in place, then you can #crew a valve onto it.

Groco Thru-Hull Fitting with Nut, 3/4" NPS, Bronze Amazon.com

I used a backing plate inside the hull.

Not a “proper seacock”, but been used on boats for many many years.

It looks like an Airmar transducer. They are 51mm or 2” diameter holes.

Airmar Hole sizing
  • 51 mm (2") (18)
  • 51 mm (2"), 57 mm (2-1/4") installation with adapter ring (1)
