Thru hull repair

Hello all,

looking for advice on repairing and replacing a thru hull. Just bought my first boat 1994 Hunter 30T and was cleaning up junk leftover and noticed the bilge pump waste hose was behind a panel and loose on the starboard hull (above the waterline). After manipulation I realized it was not screwed into a proper thru hull fitting but was instead glued with some sort of adhesive to the hole where the thru hull should have been secured (wtf). Anyways not surprisingly but there is rotten wood core around where the fitting should go and now need advice on repair and replacing. Feels solid once you get about an inch past the hole so I don’t think the vessel is condemned and is entirely rotten, but definitely needs attention around the offending site.
Was planning on scraping out all the rotten wood I can access with the hole and filling with epoxy and securing and sealing proper thru hull fitting but was hoping this would suffice. Thoughts? Thanks in advance

The wording in your question made me re-read it several times. I believe the question is, if you scrape out the rotted wood, then fill with epoxy and install a thru hull is that is sufficient. Yes, that is.

You use the term "proper" thru hull. I'm not sure what you mean by that.

Since this is above the waterline, something like this should be sufficient (you'll have to know what diameter.):

As Dj said, since that fitting is above the waterline, no valve or “proper” thru hull is required.

If your Hunter hull was cored above the waterline, I think your diagnosis is spot on. Clean out any rotten core you can reach, fill the void with thickened epoxy, an reinstall a mushroom head hose barb fitting with some sealant.

Should not be too terrible of a job.

I replaced all of the above-the-water thru hulls on my O’Day 322…but my hull is not cored.
All of the new ones…
