Thru-hull length

1985 O'Day 26'. Changing out thru-hulls. I am assuming a 2 1/2" length and a 3" length are long enough to get a ball valve onto with a 1/2" piece of wood base on the inside correct? I see these super long thru-hulls but I am guessing those are for areas such as the transom etc. right?

Well, maybe that won't work because the thru-hulls are NPS and ball cock is NPT. UGH!

OK I think I will do this. Groco thru-hull with the Groco flange adaptor which has NPS threads to the thru-hull but NPT threads on the other end and then I would just cap that end with a bronze cap with locktite probably. I would love to find a bronze cap with a safety tie hole on it for the Groco flange adaptors have them on it. OR, I will just keep the marine head and now with new thru-hull and ball valves I'll just replace all the hoses and go with Trident hoses and stainless steel hose clamps. Doe sone really need to spend the outrageous cost for true Seacocks off their thru-hulls instead of bronze ball valves?

Has anybody done it this way and is it hard to get the old thru-hull out without a special tool...how to grab those pins on the outide to hold it from moving...pipe wrench maybe?
