Hunter 41DS new orleans
Hello all
I just replaced my engine, gensrt, ac backer blocks on my 08 H41ds. They were falling apart, uncoated plywood. My bilge area is kept clean and dry mostly. I should have done something sooner. The remaining 6 blocks today I sanded, cleaned and coated with epoxy, these were bare plywood and some are iffy but the epoxy should preserve. Tomorrow I will sand and put a 2nd coat, then maybe drill 3/16 holes around and fill with more epoxy to make sure they won't delimanite any further. Check your backer blocks to see if they have been coated with anything. I love my Hunter but I know that in 08 they were under financial stress and were taken over by Marlow in 09

Hunter Marine was one of four divisions under the Luhrs group and during the recession, it was the only profitable division propping up the other three. If Hunter had been by itself, probably they would have weathered the storm. In 2008 when the recession was hitting, actually the dealers started to see a decrease in sales starting in 2006 but in 2008, Hunter had over 75 orders in house for boats mostly large. I think it was a little later after 2010 thru bankruptcy as the profits from Hunter could no longer support the other three power boat divisions, Marlow took over. There is other information but not sure nor is it worth mentioning now. What you do have here is a forum with many owners a lot whom are Hunter owners and the current owner of this forum is a former employee of Hunter who started in construction/building, warranty, sales and so on. He is working hard to make sure parts are readibly available and with the valuable and knowledagble people for example, Dave Groshong, they work very hard to help you.

The epoxy won't preserve, not if it's just on the outside (not removed and coated on all sides). Water will get under and be sealed in. The fungus is already established.

Assuming they are "iffy," I can't imagine not replacing them with FRP, if you can get to them. Seems obvious. I would waste the time coating them, and epoxy will not seep more than a few hundredth of an inch from those drilled holes... unless they are already rotten, in which case you have your answer. Structural grade from McMaster Carr is fine; no need for G10 for this.

I nixed a plan to use wooden backer-blocks on a new GROCO thru-hull, but cutting a G10 fiberglass backer block ate a couple of expensive hole saw blades.

Don't use G10. There is no reason other than forum gospel. Use structural grade. It's still stronger than the hull.
