Through hulls

I am going to install a Standard Horizon Speed and Log instrument on my 260. This will require a through hull transducer. My choices are Bronze or Nylon. Could I get the pro's and con's of these different materials? I'm not very excited about putting a hole in the boat to begin with, I just want to plug the hole with the correct device. Personally?

I would use nylon/marelon above the waterline for sink drains, A/C outlet, scuppers, etc. Below the waterline always bronze.

Nylon is OK.

Michael: We have had a nylon tranducer in our bilge for 15 years and it has been just fine. I personally would not use nylon(or anyother plastic) thru hulls for a seacock but I feel that they are fine if they are protected from getting banged. You will need to go thru the hull for your speed/temp. transducer, but you may want to look into putting your depth sounder on the inside of the hull. You can place it forward under the v-berth were it belongs and you will not need to cut another hole in your hull.

Thru hulls

Marelon below the waterline will outlast bronze and you will not have the possibility of galvanic corrosion. Many nylon type materials above the waterline are subject to UV destruction.

Marine Surveyers

Will tell you "no below waterline nylon thruhulls." The first thing they do is hit them with a rubber mallet to see if they are still sound then advise that you change them. r.w.landau

Thru-hull

Michael, I remember seeing a hull read through puck type transducer for speed as well as depth but I am not sure if it is available with the Standard Horizon. If you choose the thru-hull method, Marelon is not nylon.

Use the marlon

I replaced my speed and log last year with the standard horizion series and used the marlon. I have used the marlon transducers on my last two boats as well, one of which is still in this area and still has the same transducer which was installed about nine years ago and has had no problems. And yes most marine surveyors will recommend you replace marlon thru hulls (sea cocks) with bronze. This is largely due to the fact that the valve shanks of marlon are known to break. On the other hand you don't have to worry about electrolisys. I have seen bronze thru hulls crumble on boats because of this.

bronze/ nylon/ marlon

Michael, The bronze will show signs of decay. Nylon will usually yellow but when it cracks, it breaks. Marlon is something that still has to be tested with time. I believe it falls into the nylon catagory. I think I would use the marlon with the knowledge that if it breaks, I would have to fill the hole. So I would carry a tapered plug of wood or rubber for a quick fix should something happen. The fear is that since the device protrudes from the hull, if you would hit something, it would shear the device off of the boat. Or if it were old, the synthetics have a tendancy to get brittle and a smack may crack or shatter it. r.w.landau
