Throttle won't hold position

Does anyone have a suggestion on how to "brake" a throttle cable to keep the throttle at a constant setting? The only cable brake I can find is a Morse Control that clamps down on the cable jacket; however, it is to large for my Hunter 30 throttle cable.

Throttle clamp

I have a 39 cent cable clamp from the local hardware store, on the throttle cable about a foot from the engine linkage that works perfect. To adjust it just tighten the two nuts down til it holds but doesn't bind it.

Jeff, Most steering pedestals have a throttle lever brake, generally located inside underneath the compass. It hold the throttle lever not the cable. The one on my 1989 33.5 is an Edson, and this summer I had the same trouble with the throttle slipping. I only had to take off the compass, reach in and give the bolt an 1/8 of a turn and the throttle held nicely. Phil

I just but on a "U" bolt on the cable. I am going to move it a few inches along the cable annually just to avoid any excessive wear on the cable. Prior to that I had a rubber band fix, meaning I looped a rubber band around the lever and forward to a knob on the pedestal .

J Clamp

Jeff: We have had a clamp on our cable for 15 years. There has been no problem with these clamps. They are made by the cable companies for their cables. It is much easier to adjust and you will not need to remove your compass every couple of months. http://www.sailboatowners.com/upload/display.tpl?folder=Dion73064768600&fno=17

I am with Fred -

Just hope that Fred is ok with that. I probably should have asked. Oh my! Now where did I put my Strunk and whatever? Had a cable break once. I was at the entrance to the Ballard Locks. It was the shift cable for the gearbox. Good luck was with me at the time. But then again, bad luck started it all. Must not discriminate... Plus that is just my opinion... I was in neutral and going very slowly (under two knots) just like the documented rule said on the sign. I steered against the wall at the entrance and lassoed a cleat. The wind helped a lot. That is why I would not ever use any clamp which stresses the cable in any way. If it had been the throttle, I might not have been able to slow down or avoid hitting someone or something else. The pedestal screw will work but I have added another one by drilling and tapping at another place on the shaft. I think I used a stainsless steel setscrew which had the business end ground flat. I used a second set screw atop the first to keep it in from working loose. I hope no one is offended by my: spelliing, gramm er, use of words like: with, lassoed, screw, good, bad, opinion, shaft, neutral, business, etc. My apologies in advance or is that too soon?

Why are you worried about offending Patrick?

Oh!,,,, The last paragraph???!! Do you run a porn site on the side? Oh, here :) (almost forgot) Don't want to get flamed. Here's s'more :):):). P.S. And the only time we've ever, in 18 years, not been able to stop with the engine is,, are you ready?, going into the Ballard locks. The geared folding prop wouldn't open in reverse. (New boat) P.S. Lassoed the bollard too.

I am soon to be flameproof

Got my set of CWU-44/P and CWU-45/P ordered. For those non-military flyer types, that is Nomex underwear which is fire resistant. Good stuff when you go over the edge - especially if it is on fire!

Hunter 30 throttle

I've sailed two club Hunter 30s, and now own one, and they all had the same problem with the throttle--it slowly backs off from the cruising position (80% of max rpm, around 2750). One boat had a small knotted line. I use a small piece of bungy cord. Works great. Allows for rapid deceleration if needed, but has just enough tension to hold the throttle in any giving position...

Throttle cruise control

I had the same problem...try a bungee or spring cord around your pedistal and stretch it back to come around the throttle and hold it up. Works great, just like a jerry-rigged cruise control.

Patrick, so what did a clamp have to do with it?

Patrick: I understand your concern. I had the transmission linkage separate from from the transmission lever. This also had nothing to do with a cable clamp. These clamps are made for the cables by the manufacturers. There is very little tension on the housing with the "J" clamp. They only apply the amount of friction on the housing that is lost with wear. This product (Morse 'J' Clamp) was recommended by one of the best Yanmar dealers in the SF bay area. They have a hell of a lot more experience with these things than we do. If you are concerned about cable wear, I would suggest that you R/R the cable each year and lube it with Teflon or Lithium grease. This will help prevent a total failure as you had.

Steve - don't know why it broke

but it did and the shift cable gets used a lot less than the throttle cable. I suspect that the breaking point was kinked by one of these clamps. It was probably put onto the wrong cable at some time and then taken off. I have also been in a throttle breakage incident where my friend was backing down his ski boat and the cable broke jamming the throttle in nearly full position. That made it impossible to shift to neutral. He made a series of circles at fairly high speed in reverse in the marina bouncing off a few boats in the process. He did not think to shut off the engine in all of the excitement. I do not know why his cable broke or why it stuck in the high speed position. It is so easy to do the job as designed or improve it as I did that it makes no sense to me to use one of these clamps. The clamp option is simply wrong in my opinion. You of course are entitled to yours.

I use a bugee just like rumrunner

...it's easy and works great. Slide the hook of the bungee up the throttle lever to use it, slide it down again and it does nothing.
