When running the throttle slips back in RPM's. I have to put a vice grip on it to counter balance. Is there some way of tightening it up to stop the deceleration from occurring.

My '79 Edson pedestal does not have a throttle brake. Instead it is a clamp on the cable as Rick describes.

You can check inside the pedestal (below the compass), some of the units have a set screw to tension the throttle.

The other option is like above. There is also a device called a "J" clamp. I think you may find these through most of the cable providers.

After trying several adjustments, a couple of moist paper towels stuffed between the throttle and the pedestal has been a quick, easy, cheap fix for me for the last 20 years.

The best engineering solutions are the simplest. A piece of cardboard folded over a few times makes a perfect compressible wedge. Tie a string to it and cover it with a waterproof tape. Use the wedge to hold the throtle lever in place. Tie the bitter end of the string to the binacle so you won't loose it wihen not in use. It serves the same function as Scott's moist paper towels but lasts longer. You could even set up a velcro strip as a holder for a more proffesional look.

I moved the "j" clamp on my throttle cable from a location near the engiine end to right at the bottom of the pedestal. I remember reading some where that this type of clamp should be attached as near to the control end of the cable as possible so as to minimize the effect of the flex in the cable. I found it works much better now, but harder to get to to adjust.

fixed

I put a clamp on the cable as people suggested and it works fine. I used a small electrical grounding clamp.

Thank you all for your help.
