Throttle movement

I think this has been discussed before, but I would like to ask if anybody has a new solution. My throttle continually moves toward idle while running. I hold it in position with a bungie cord wrapped around the pedestal. While replacing my shaft seal, I noticed that the previous owner had put a "C" clamp on the throttle cable to pinch the cable, thus, providing some friction. I took it off because it wasn't working and I didn't like the idea of pinching the cable. Has anybody installed a spring to the throtte arm on the engine? Any other ideas?

Recommended by Yanmar dealer

Bob: Our Yanmar dealer recommended that we use the Morse clamp on the throttle for this purpose. I am sure that it wears on the cable but that is what they are designed for. They cause just enough friction to keep the throttle from creaping. The cost of a new cable is not that expensive that you cannot afford to replace it every 10-20 years. I published a short article in the Photo Forum on this subject several months ago. You may want to check it out to see if it is the same thing that you had.

Think Steve is right.

My H37C has that funny looking aluminum clamp on the throttle cable also. It's easily accessible from in front of the engine with the ladder and top cover removed. But I have never had to adjust it and my throttle stays right where I set it.

Edson Pedestal

If you have an Edson Pedestal Guard where the throttle is mounted, there is a kit you can purchase from Edson that puts more friction on the throttle lever to match the Yanmar spring. This keeps the cable from wearing out. I made my own and installed it on the outside of the pedestal guard and right on the throttle lever shaft. Works great.

Modify or replace

The orignal Edson thottle would creep. So I drill and threaded the casing to accomadate 2 set screws. The first would apply the correct friction required. The second would lock the first in place. This worked fine, but I still hated the transmission lever position. So later I replaced the hold assembly with the 2 lever on binnacle type.
