Throttle Linkage Problem

Hi Gordon, I have a 1992 Hunter 335 with a Yanmar 3gm30F diesel. I have a throttle linkage problem. The throttle control on the binnacle will slow down the engine, but will not speed it up. When I manually adjust the throttle on the engine, the throttle control lever moves in both directions. I have yet to spot an obvious break, and since the throttle movement does move the control lever, I'm thinking the cable must be intact. I'm suspecting there is a linkage between the rod that runs down the binnacle and the cable that exits the binnacle. Could this be a potential problem? Any other thoughts? Thanks for your help. Is there a place to secure...

Gary: I am guessing, but there is probably a place to secure the cable housing. On the older Y/S pedestals there was a screw and a clamp that secured the cable housing inside the tower. This allows the cable to move but the housing is stationary. You may also have this type of arrangement on the engine too. Can you remember if you have done anything on pedestal or the engine since this problem has started?

Thanks, Steve.

I haven't done anything to either the binnacle or the engine that I'm aware of. The last time I had the boat out the throttle control was becoming stiff. Before I had a chance to look into it, it went out totally, happily while I was in the slip and just starting the motor for a between-sails warmup. There is a fitting attached to the throttle control cable near the aft end of the engine. It is attached with two screws and is a u shaped bracket about an inch long, and is just hanging in the air. It is obviously not doing anything where it is, but I can't find anything that it would have come loose from. It is however, another primary suspect. Any additional thoughts would be appreciated. Gary

Throttle cable

The outer jacket of your throttle cable must be secured on both ends. The little piece you say is floating around sounds like the retaining bracket at the engine. It has two slots and a U clamp over the cable. It is then bolted to the engine on the side of the manifold. You will probably find screws to reattach it in your bilge.
