I have an 84 Catalina 30 SR for more than a year now and have had a problem keeping the throttle handle in position. It seems to ease off under power. Is there a spring or other devise that I can add on to prevent this from happening? Or do I have to replace the cable? Any advise is greatly appreciated. Sincerely, Wally Hammons "Ms.Cheeky" Redondo Beach, CA

There could be binding

somewhere in the cable run, could be a kink. Where are your controls? If you have an Edson pedistal with the controls mounted there, depending on age of the contol housing, there might be a friction screw which is made to add friction to the control. My 84 C30 Edson pedistal does not have this screw. Another possibility is the delrin bushing between the lever and housing, usually it gets stiffer with age, but in your case it could be disintegrating. If there is no kink or these other things, add a cable clamp on the throttle cable near the engine, this should provide some friction.

Go to Edson's website

Here's the link to their steering catalog: http://www.edsonmarine.com/traditional/index.html Assuming you do have an Edson pedestal. There should be an adjustment screw underneath the compass inside the pedestal. You shouldn't have to mess with any cables. We adjust ours every two years or so.

Another option

On my '82 SR, there is no friction screw in the pedistal. I called Edson and they sent me a small clap to place around the cable sleeve just aft of the engine. They instructed me not to tighten it too much to prevent damage to the cable. I haven't tried it yet. I've been using a velcro tie to hold the lever in place.

Check the linkage on the engine

Check at the linkage on the engine, if it is loose the throttle will slip.

If all else fails, use a small bungee, works fine holding the throttle in place.

What is the best way to access the pedistal?

I have a New-to-me 1990 Catalina 30. I am going to add autohelm to it and I will need to run wiring through the pedistal. What is the best way to access the pedistal? Also, How hard is it to remove the compass and which screws to you remove?
