I have an 83 H34... the throttle control on the pedestal doesn't seem to have enough "brake" on it to hold a selected position by itself for very long.... is this an adjustment required inside the pedestal? or at the engine? Anyone had to fiddle with this lately? Thanx

throttle brake

Had the same problem with my H31. There's a small clamp/brake bracket you can order from West, BoatUS, etc., that will solve the problem. Check the photo form for picture posted by Steve Dion of his installation. Worked great for me. Steve monitors this site a lot and I'm sure he will be glad to give you the part number. Trust me, it really works great.

Yes and No.

Ted: There is a set screw inside the pedestal that will apply some tension to the throttle (assuming you have a Y/S setup). What I ended up doing was putting a 'J' clamp on the cable. You are suppose to place it as close as possible to the lever end of the cable, but the only practical place to put it was in the engine compartment on our '85 H'31. I did a photo forum article on this unit. The price was under $20.

save your money, here's what we did

take an old tennis ball, make a small slice at each end so the lever can fit through, and voila, it will hold the setting every time.

Cable brake

Any system of braking occasionally needs servicing. Brakes rely on friction which produces wear. For you to get from 1983 to now probably means that there is already a brake in the system that needs adjusting. Some pedestals have a brake on the shaft that can be adjusted by taking the top off the pedestal. Others have a brake on the cable, usually Morse 44386 ($14.65 at Diesel Direct) that can be tightened to increase the friction. Getting the proper adjustment often requires a few tries. You cannot just tighten the brakes all the way or you won't be able to move the handle at all. You want to sneak up on the right resistance.
