Edson Wheel Throttle
I too have a 1983 C-27 (Hull #5258). This was built with an Edson pedestal wheel as standard equipment. The engine is a Universal 11 HP diesel (Model 5411). I purchased Mechanical Shift Clutch and Throttle control from Edson in order to move the throttle and clutch controls from the cockpit to the pedestal( I believe the model was 751-45). By the way, the existing cables are long enough to reroute. The installation went well with the exception of the throttle now works in reverse order of what is thought to be normal operation. As you bring the throttle up, the engine slows down (rather than speed up) and vice versa. This tends to be confusing in docking situations. After carefully examining the engine and cable hookups, I did not see any easy way to correct this except to maybe re-route the throttle cable and attach it to the other side of the engine (i.e. from the front of the engine instead of from the rear of the engine as is the current configuration). There seems to be no way to move the cable to the opposite side of the throttle assembly on the engine. There also does not seem to be any way of reversing this throttle assembly as it is "keyed" (referring to the piece mounted on top of the engine that the throttle cable is connected to) and can only mount one way. There is also no way of reversing the hookup of the throttle cable inside of the pedestal itself. I contacted Catalina Yachts, Edson Inc., and Westerbeke on this matter and was told that the only solution is to physically reroute the cable to the other side of the engine which at this time seems pretty difficult to do. I was hopeful that there might exist a kit to reverse the throttle linkage, modify the throttle assembly on the motor, or be able to find some alternate means to correct this situation, but as yet have been unsuccessful. I have posted this situation many times and came up with the same response. If there was an engine out of a boat and available to work on, there might be a chance to manufacture something, but don't look for something already in existence. I have used this configuration for the past four years and although it takes and extra second or two to realize the correct throw for the throttle, I would rather have the throttle and cluth arrangements at the wheel and readily accessible and to have to reach down and possible take my eyes off the given situation. I hope this helps and if anyone out there has any info that might fix this, please let me know.Regards,Mike Beaujean"Timeless Flight"C-27 #5258
