All, I am trying to get the boat ready for the season and need to replace the throttle cable. Here is my problem: with wheel steering, the throttle and transmission cables SEEM to be clamped down inside the pedestal. I can detach the throttle cabel from the lever at the top with no problem. Do I have to dis-assemble the pedestal to replace the throttle cable? It appears that there is a small bolt on the outside of the pedestal that may loosen the inside clamp. But I am a little afriad to start loosening it if it might fall down inside the pedestal etc. Any thoughts on this?

When I replaced the trottle and Xmission cable

on my Hunter 260, I removed the pedistal. Removing the four bolts that hold it down. I had to replace two of the bolts due to corosion. remember to loosen the steering cables before. Some people chose to do the operation w/o removing the pedistal, but I didn't. I would rate the job a 3 on a scale of ten, easy. The bolt on the side of the pedistal does loosen the hold down for the cables but I found it easer to take down the pedistal thn try to fish the bolt in the upright position. Go to the Edson site for details

I didn't need to take off the whole pedistal but do replace them both at once. It's a chore but is easier after doing it once/twice. Be careful to route them through the same way the old ones were so they don't bind on the lower pullys or steering cables. Good luck Michael

Pedestal Mount for Hunter 260 2001

1. There are excellent instructions at the Edson site. The locknot (covered by a white plastic cap) which is attached to bolt through the bulkhead fitting is on the aft side of pedestal. Advice: Have a long screwdriver to work the bulkhead fitting back in place with the new cable(s) clamped in. 2. Now I need help as somehow I fouled the portside steering cable between the pulley and the plate having loosened the cable to make room for the chain to move forward to get the bulkhead fitting out. I saw another article in the forum about cutting an accress hole and installing a throough deck to reseal the opening but that's probable way to complicated for me. I read in this thread about removing the bolts attaching the pedestal. What is on the other end of the bolts? Are the nuts under the deck fixed (glued or bedded) in place? The bolt heads are not much above the pedestal base and might be difficult to grip. Any ideas? I looking at the deck insert that the pedetal is mounted to and wonder if it is unwise to remove or tilt up to gain access (after removing the rudder post)?

Enlist a teenageer with long arms

Don't laugh too hard, you will find their long skinny arms helpful when you loosen/tighten the nuts underneath the deck assemble for the Edson base. Go slow when taking everything apart, taking care not to have cables, compass, etc...banging into the white, unscratched surface of the wheel housing. Now is the time to ask the question, should I replace both cables? I have replaced one cable this prep season and now I"m second guessing if I should of just replaced both cables. Like Big Foot, teenagers are hard to find, (when work is involved) trick them into coming near the boat and then threaten or bribe them to go upside down into the stern area, and reach towards the bolts. You might need to teach them the lefty, loosy thing too. Good luck. Joe P.
