Throttle cable trouble.

We are having trouble with the throttle cable on our '79 h33. It has stopped operating at the pedestal. While motoring we had to manually adjust the throttle at the engine. Once it's set it is possible to get some response at the helm but not reliably. In addition, if we set it on idle it will intermittently throttle up on its own. We went to the boat today to explore and repair but found it difficult (nearly impossible) to disassemble the pedestal (Edson) in order to get to the cable and linkage. At this point we contacted someone to look at the problem next week but it sure would be nice to repair it ahead of time. Engine type is Yanmar 2QM15. Any suggestions? Thanks.

Edson or other?

If you have the Edson pedestal you can look at http://www.edsonmarine.com to find their procedure and advice for changing the cables. The other pedestal for that boat might be a Merriman, which is not made anymore. Perhaps someone else has some advice.

I just fixed something similar

Hi Mike, I have a '79 Hunter 30, and I just fixed my clutch cable, so I'll share what I found out in the process. It sounds to me like your control cable may be slipping, loose, or maladjusted. There's a clamp inside the pedestal tube that has to hold the body of the cable in place so that the cable itself can apply pressure to whatever it's adjusting. It's apparantly more common than I thought for engine vibration to loosen this clamp, causing loss of control in the throttle, clutch, or both. If you get it re-adjusted, make sure to put some Loctite on it and keep it tight. I too learned the hard way. (Who knew?) The link that the other guy gave to Edsonmarine.com is a good one - go to the "Tech Support" area and there's step-by-step instructions for changing or working on the cables. It's not as complicated as it appears at first - like a magic trick - it's all in knowing a few important details. As for throttling up by itself, one possible solution is that the throttle lever is loose enough to allow the engine to throttle itself up - moving the throttle lever as it pleases. There's an adjustment inside the pedestal near the throttle lever that will allow you to adjust the amount of tension on the lever so that the engine can't move it. Just give it a half turn or so and it might solve your problem - assuming it's a control cable problem in the first place. Hope this helps.

cable replacement

shouldn't throttle up on its own... you may need a clamp of some type to add some resistance. On my edson pedestal, cable replacement is straight forward. You start at the top with compas and take apart the sections down to the throttle/shift levers. (I have a 79 37' Cutter). The cables are pretty standard items and any ships store should have them or be able to get them on a day's notice. The cable goes down through the pedestal, under the cockpit. The throttle cable then wraps all the way around to front of the engine before heading back to the throttle lever. There are a couple of clamps on mine to hold the cable to the side of the engine compartment, and one clamp to provide some resistance to the cable moving. Not too complicated.

Clamp defined

The clamp Debra refers to is nothing more than a small stainless U-clamp with a bridge that goes over the two ends and bolts that tighten down. As your tighten it, have your helper move the throttle to discover just the right play. This works well and won't bother you again. By the same token, if the cable is too tight, you can loosen the clamp. You can also add a drop of winch oil up at the top to smooth out the play.

It happened again

You probably have a Merriman pedisal by Yacht Specialtes. Thay are no longer in business, sold to edson. You will find a broken bracket on a top ring peice under the compass,You may be able to repair it,but your best bet is to have a machine shop make a new one. I will need one to,and you could sell them on this site to all the other H-33 Owners who will have this problem in the future. Any one know how to reach Joe Constance Machine Shope I think he was making a replacement part.:(
