I own an 83 model 31 and have a problem getting the throttle cable to set to the right tension after the cable was replaced. This is the original Merriman Pedestal and no matter how I adjust the cable brakes it will not hold.I'd appreciate any help in this matter.

throttle tension

I have an 85 H31. Under the compass, there is a small hole, in which there is a throttle tension adjustment screw. When the throttle no longer holds, I remove the compass, put a screwdriver down the hole and increase the tension on the screw, while checking to see if the throttle will hold at different settings. If you have already done this, your guess is as good as mine!

cable clamp too

Lou: As Tim mentioned there is the set screw under the compass. We also have a clamp on the cable in the engine compartment. There is a name for this clamp (but I do not know what it is called). It is basically two pieces of alum w/ a couple of holes in it. They put a bolt and nut on each side and tighten them down until it put ADDITIONAL tension on the cable. I think if you look in the archieves you will find out what this is called.

Moore Clamp?

It seems to me the name of that throttle cable clamp was a Moore clamp, or Moore's clamp... but he's right, it's a very simple little contraption that seems to work very well. I think they work better if you can install it closer to the pedestal than the engine end of the cable, of course that might introduce access issues.

stay put fix

My throttle lever sometimes likes to wander. For a quite fix I got a tennis ball and cut a hole in the bottom and top and slide it onto the lever and wedge it down against the compass housing.
