Throttle and Transmission Cables

I am looking for some help on my transmission and throttle cables. Attached to a Merriman pedestal, my gear shift lever moves smoothly between neutral and reverse. Moving the lever to forward from neutral requires a very hard push to the extent the lever rests against the pedestal. FWD won't engage unless the lever is in that position. It takes two hands to pull the lever back to neutral.
I don't know where to begin trouble shooting and don't want to dismantle the pedestal if I don't have to.
Could the cable be too long? There is about 2-2 1/2 feet looped in the tray/cover in the aft berth.

Also after setting my throttle it fades back toward idle if I don't attach a small bungee

You need to be sure that the cable is restrained inside the pedestal. There is a screw on the forward side of the pedestal tube that has a braket attached to it on the inside. The capture the throttle & transmission cables.

I am not sure but there may also be another on on the engine/transmission that also holds the cable housing in place.

I would check this out first. I don't see that the length of the cable makes any difference as long at the cable housing and the cable itself do not move together.

I agree with steve.. It sounds like the housing of the cable is not being restrained .. On my old Merriman, that screw is on the aft side of the pedestal tube just below the axel. Put it in neurtal and then check to see if the screw is tight or can be tightened.. also check the housing restraint on the side of the transmission.. Cable does sound a bit long but if it used to work, then ya have something that got loose.. Good luck with it

On my 1984-31, I found the screw on the aft side of the pedestal tube. That screw only restrains the throttle cable. The gearshift cable is attaches to an arm that attaches to shift mechanism. It is notable that the steering linkage interferes some with both cables. Needless to say, my desire to avoid tearing down the top part of the pedestal didn't work out as planned...

1981 Hunter 30 Throttle Cable

Similar problem with my throttle cable on an Edison pedestal. Throttle cable shield is cracked / very stiff and need's to be replaced. I have the replacement cable, but need a little advice on how to replace. Can see the clam shell type bracket connected via a single screw 9-10 inches from the top of the pedestal (aft), below the wheel shaft & chain assembly. Needless to say, I can't reach the cable bracket by hand and am concerned about starting a repair that I can't finish. Does the bracket disconnect from pedestal and pull up ??? If so, how do I realign / reconnect ?? If not ... how do I feed the cable into the bracket and down the pedestal ?? The bracket doesn't seem to open enough to take the OD of the cable assembly. mg
