No, this isn't a misposting from an x-rated site. I've developed a pulsating vibration in my 1983 C-36 and wonder if anyone has any sugestions. It rattles everything on board in a pulse, much like a cat purring. It also happens at all RPMs. Nothing changed that I know of since the last time I motored anywhere. Help....!

Alignment

Sounds like the engine has settled too much and has been thrown out of alignment. The shaft is probably out of whack as a result, which isn't helping performance. A competent yard mechanic can realign the engine in short order.

All RPM's?

Dave: Looks like it's time to pull the boat. Prop, shaft, alignment or motor mounts are the places to start looking! Does it do it when it's out of gear?

check this first

The other replies sound good but before you spend the money to haul your boat check your stuffing box first. If it's really dripping...that could be the answer. My C-320 started to throb as I was crossing the gulf...at higher rpms though...and all I had to do was tighten the box...voila.

Bad Vibes

Dave, These are all possibilities but there are simpler things also. Part of the zink could have fallen off. You might have something wrapped around the shaft. You might have bent a blade. Might even be some critter has fastened himself to the prop. You didn't elaborate on "developed a vibration" Does that mean that it occured over weeks, months, years? Generally motor mounts don't just wear out quickly but they do break. I would start analyzing the problem more. Try running the engine while tied up in your slip. You should be able to feel or see where the vibration occures. You should certainly be able to locate a bad mount. Good Luck Les s/v/Mutual Fun

Clean prop?

Bottom growth on the prop is never ballanced. One blade more fouled than the others will cause vibration like you describe.

same problem

Have the same problem on mine. I thought is was the barnacke build up on the sea trial but the more i look at it the shaft and stuffing box do look a little out of align. I'm not going to worry about it now but will pull the shaft back and check things out this fall howie
